i don't know how you'd mate a transmission to it, since pretty much every volkswagen is a FWD piece of junk(i sit on a high horse with my rear wheel drive cars, much as i do with trucks that have solid axles)

I'd go drive one in a VW first... I almost bought a TDI Jetta a few years back as a commuter car. It's gutless at low RPMs, so you might find that you need to change your gearing to get decent performance. Now if you could squeeze a DuraMax in....

i think the main problem would be that volkswagen makes no rear wheel drive cars that i know of, so there's no bellhousing that would fit a truck tranny. and you'd have to be insane to put a transaxle in a truck!

I have a 2001 TDi Jetta and am somewhat familiar with the engines in question. I know of a couple of people who have put TDI's in other vehicles (a Samurai, assorted small cars). You can mount a side mounted engine with a tranny behind it but these people fabricated their own engine mounts and bell housings. There is a 5 cylinder TDi available in the Vanagan in Europe that would meet our needs here in the States and it is also the same 5 cyl that got doubled up to make the v10 TDi in the new Toureg.
What we need to find is someone who bought a VW copy of the Toyota pickup. The 3rd gen body style (89-95) was licensed to VW from Toyota, used the Toyota diesel engine (4 cyl), but VW diesel technology was applied to it to increase mileage and performance. If there is a stockpile of those engines somewhere then perhaps they will be an easy swap. I don't think with our high profile and boxy styling that our mileage will be 40+ but I could see our trucks getting around 30 with an efficient diesel.

Why not just try and get the Yota 1KZ-TE engine. Approx. 135hp and 240lb/ft.
It's what I have in my Japanese Hilux Surf. And I get 28 - 32mpg

You could get a VW Taro, they came in diesel (Toyota Diesel) that is. then you'll have your VW 4Runner.
