Very serious about 4wd conversion
Ok I really want to add 4wd to my 2wd 96 runner. I would consider selling it and buying a 4wd but it seems to be hard to find a 4wd 3rd gen with the 2.7L engine in my area.
I have researched and have sourced out the following parts localy...
W59 transmission from a 4wd tocoma w/ TC...$500
Front Non-ADD Diff from a tocoma.......$350
Axle shafts..... $50 each
Locking hubs.....$130 for the set
For a total cost of $1080
Are there any other parts I would need? I havent purchased any of these yet. I dont know if the prices are fair or not. I dont have the money right now either but I really would like to add 4wd to my 4runner. I am searching for advice and opinions.

Did they ever make 3rd gen 2.7 4runners in 4wd? You don't want to buy a 3.4 4wd?
If you're dead set on it I'd research the electronics necessary to make it look and work as factory as possible as well. I know that the ECUs are different between 2wd and 4wd as well as different from tacomas and 4runners.
Remember the drive shafts, hubs/spindles, and consoles.

I don't care if you guys can spell or not, but a 4wd w/ a 3.4 is the way to go. They did make some 4x4s w/ 2.7s (base models), but not very many. Even with the 3.4, the 4runner isn't known for it's raw HP. Unless you are 100% attached to your runner now, I would just sell it and get a SR5 or Limited 4x4 and enjoy the power upgrade from your 2.7. The 3.4s still get 16-21 mpg.

I am thinking this may be the way to go.... I am not super attached to my 4runner. I have only had it a couple months. I did paint it so it is very clean. I really do like the 2.7L though. Great fuel economy and no timing belt to worry about replacing. I think I may just bite the bullet and put my 96 up for sale. Its gonna need tires soon anyway. I guess now would be a good time to sell before I drop big $ on new tires.
And I am sorry about the spelling mistake. seems stupid to get hung up on it but I fixed the typo for the offended parties.

Nothing wrong with the 3.0,mine still has power even in 5th gear.The word advice is often misspelled as advise,guess I just came to the end of myself.Im not offended,and there other people in here that are grammar police,lol.If we train our eyes to sloppy spelling and then repeat that on a job application then we look like we have a first grade education.Know what I mean?

Not worth it on such a reliable vehicle and in original good working condition. Buy a 3.4L 4x4 and spend time putting upgrades on it instead of spending time retrofitting 4x4. You will spend less time and money in the long run. Keep in mind if you decide to sell a converted 4x4 (or any modified vehicle), no matter how perfect it is, it's always assumed someone else is inheriting the problems and headache.
