Vanishing Coolant in 3RZ
I posted earlier that my 96 Tacomas 2.7 3RZ was going through about 1-3 of the coolant overflows a week and i couldnt find out why. Today me and my buddy tested it and everything came back fine.
Heres what we did-
Pressure tested the cooling system
Tested the radiator for hydrocarbons while the truck was running
Tested the exhaust for coolant burn-off
Replaced the radiator cap
Ran the truck for 15 minutes with water sensitive paper under the water pump
And checked my heater core for leaks.
I am completely lost and so is my mechanic friend, where is this stuff going?!
weve ruled out Waterpump, radiator, radiator cap, hoses, and H/G from both intake and exhaust ports.
Im ready to throw in the towel because im completely stumped. Help!

Is your carpet wet or your firewall dripping in the passenger corner? Sounds like you could have a leaky heater core or a gasket on the back of the motor going bad. How did the plugs look? You could be burning it but it sounds like you you checked for HC's in the cooling system...
how did you check the heater core? That heater box is big and could hold a ton of coolant before dripping out.
Check on the back of the head for leaks....I was looking at mine with the cab off and it looks like it has the same coolant plate thing the 22re's have.

Did this happen after you did a coolant flush?
Mine was doing the same thing, after my second fill on the overflow reservoir it was ok. It's prolly air that got purged in the system, but i would keep observing.

A little coolant could be leaking into the combustion chamber every time the truck is off and then it burns it off and seals off the leak once the engine builds up pressure and heat. This happened to me.
Test/smell the exhaust right when you start the truck and you may find this is the case. Hopefully it's not, but if coolant isn't dripping on the ground and you're loosing that much, it can really only be going 1 of 2 places - into the combustion chamber or out the water pump (and burning off before it hits the ground). Otherwise a pressure test should have made it apparent.
