Question URD Fuel Upgrade Installation

Ok - with the new 285s I'm getting more ping than before to the point of now considering the URD kit. Can the average joe install the kit? I'm game to try it, but if anyone has a link to a write-up that would be great. The hard part is the fuel pump . . . . right?


What suggestion/advice do you folks have?

The hard part for me IS the fuel pump. I don't have a garage to do it in. It's illegal in my city to even change the oil on the street. I get away with that so far. I am mechanically inclined to accept the task, But I'm not sure I can get it done in 2 days. It is my only mode of transportation, so I can't be without it. I want a mechanic to do it, but they don't make me feel too comfy about them doing it - Plus they want about $1,000. They don't like the tweaking part of the FTC.
Buy it and we'll try to have Gadget install them both for us :0) Ultimate consumer support

Alrighty, here's my experience with the GenII SC and URD kit. BTW, I installed both at the same time, so I can't compare the performance of the SC before and after the URD kit.

Can an average joe install the kit? Yes, I think so, if you have the tools and if you have some experience with working on cars. Personally, I've never rebuilt a motor or taken a transmission apart, but I have replaced brake pads, alternators, radiators, fluids, etc, and installed electronic components. With this novice background, the install was pretty easy, just time consuming and tedious. The entire install of SC and URD kit took me 40 hours. Some people have said that they have done it in 6 - 8 hours, but I'm real slow and cautious, plus a lot of the steps I had never done before. If I had to do it again, I could probably cut the time in at least half, and still not be sloppy. One thing though, I did the job inside my garage at night where I had decent light, tunes, etc--I wouldn't want to do it without a garage, especially when I needed electricity for the soldering iron.

The URD kit comes with a write up/instructions. The instructions were very helpful, and included pictures.

The installation of the fuel pump wasn't too difficult. The hard part was getting the gas tank in and out by myself. The actual installation of the pump is pretty straight forward.

The first couple of times I drove it after the install, I had a nasty high gear/low rpm ping with the stock FTC settings (and So Cal 91 octane). After tweaking the timing retard, the ping is gone. Looking back, the ping was so bad before adjusting the timing that I wouldn't want to run with just the SC and no ability to adjust the timing.
