Un-Restrictive and Quiet Muffler?

Is there a muffler for my 02 4Runner that is quiet with maybe a little rumble on acceleration but no drone at speed with performance enhancing characteristics. I just want the performance you would get from a flowmaster or something like that without the noise.

That's next to impossible, but I'd try and give TRD mufflers a shot.

Anyone have first hand experience with Flowmaster 50 Series mufflers? I saw some when I searched, but they are mostly on 2nd gen's.

Though i have no facts which speak to the restrictiveness, the 18" Magnaflow I had was fairly mellow and deep.. not very intense but a nice tone..the 14" i have now is much more aggressive

Someone posted this a while back and I thought they were all to loud. But it is a good way to get an idea what they sound like.

I had a Flowmaster 50 on my 3.4 and it wasnt loud at all. They are a 3 chamber design. I now have a Magnaflow and its a little louder. I had the Flo on a 2.5" crush bent custom catback system and changed it out for a mandrel bent 2.5" system w/ Magnaflow muffler.

Do you have power loss from the backpressure being less? I had a cut out for awhile in my old truck before the muffler and it sounded like crap and had no power...

Get a 24" magnaflow. I put one in my truck and I LOVE it. Not too loud, but with t a nice rumble. The smaller the muffler, the louder it will be. I don't understand the infatuation with flowmasters...

Ditto on this one. I have the same muffler on my 3rd gen and it's only louder during acceleration but pretty tame otherwise. It has improved throttle response but don't know about hp.

Well I love Magnaflow- I have one on my Ranger that I'm trying to sell, I just know its a little loud but I guess I'll try the longer Magnaflow, thanks for the input.

I'm sure you will like it. My girlfriend was driving my truck the other day and I was standing there when she pulled away and my truck sounded awesome. It's not often you get to hear what it sounds like when you aren't driving it.

Here is a good website. You want the 24" center/offset.

probably little difference between the magna and the flowmaster. it's more personal preference and how your buddy's rig sounds, recommendations, etc. i've got the flow 50 cause it was cheap and new on ebay and it doesn't resonate at highway speed. nice low end sound, but with all of them, do the cat back in 2.25 or larger, depending on if yours is a 4 or 6, if you want all the performance.

So you guys think a 2.5" cat back with a 24" Magnaflow C/O muffler would be just the ticket?

Yes, but don't expect miracles. What I have found with my 18" is that the transmission won't downshift as much as it used to with the stock system, and I am using 2.25" pipes. Since then, I have added a resonator (noise level) which made the truck downshift again and now I am basically annoyed, because I don't have any useful gain in performance/throttle response which I know I could have with a 24" and a 2.5" system.

Summary: Yes, I believe that that is your ticket. I am going to try that very soon. I hope the 2.5" piping will give it a nice throaty tone with a kick up in performace.

P.S.: I just noticed you said 2.5 catback. Personally I am going to do 2.5" all the way back.

I know the OP has a 4Runner, but heres a killer deal for anyone (95-99 Tacoma ext. cab v-6) that wants to do a 2.5" mandrel bent stainless catback system including a Magnaflow muff. I have it, its awesome. Its like 250 to your door.
