Hi Folks,

My 2002 turns 100k miles on the clock in about an hour when I go to pick up my daughter from daycare! I'm going to change the oil/filter this weekend.

My question is which oil and filter should I use and should I upgrade my crappy air filter to a fancy one?

We recently moved from Seattle to Southern California. The temps here during the next 3 to 4 months will be in the range 75-110'.

She only gets driven c10k miles a year, mainly around town with some freeway.

I use 10-40 full synthetic here in Socal. All my filters are Toyota OEM. Keep yours the same

I'm still stuck on 86,XXX miles for my 99 Limited. It amazes me that this generation 4runner really holds its value well.

I have been happy with running the Pennzoil Ultra/Platinum 5W-30. Others have posted good results with Valvoline Synthetic in the same grade. I use a longer oil filter, either a Purolator PL20195 or Napa Gold 1516. Its adds 1/4 of a quart to the oil capacity.

Denso air filter or similar works just fine.

I've been using NAPA Gold filters since Day 1 and Castrol Syntec Full Syn 5W-30 since about 80K(Castrol Syntec Blend 5W-30 before that, but the price difference came down). I'm at 138K on my '99. I've been using Castrol and Napa Gold since I got my first car in 1970. I have never had an engine problem related to lubrication.

You can easily run 10k miles on any of the quality synthetic oils on the market today. I happen to like Amsoil 0W-30 Signature Series oil and use a Toyota filter. I am also in southern CA.

100K is nothing, but its nice to see those numbers roll over. You can run anything in that engine. I like Mobil One Advanced Fuel 0W30. Our temps are alittle more extream than So Cal....i think.

Napa Gold filter with regular Castrol 5W30 oil every 3-4k miles. I'm afraid to switch to synthetic at 106k miles when it has ran fine with regular oil since new.

Mobil 1 5W-30 and a Mobil 1 Filter. K&N permanent air filter. Also, make sure you do all the normal 100k maintenance, timing belt, water pump, etc.

Ditto on the Syn blend 5/30, and a yota filter. 100k lets see for me that was Oct 17 1992, 5 years to the day after I bought it.

I would use the factory recommended weight of oil, whatever brand you think is best and OEM filters.

It doesn't get any better than OEM for stuff like that - Toyota designed them that way for a reason.

I use a longer oil filter, Napa Gold 1516. There is plenty of room for the longer filter and it does add a bit more capacity for your oil. My oil capacity is almost 6 quarts with th elonger WIX filter. I have 154K on my '98 and have used Valvoline or Quaker State 5W-30. No leaks and the engine still doesn't use any oil between changes. Getting ready to do the oil again in prep for my trip to SoCal, the "annual migration" in July. For air filters, I recommend using NAPA filters or OEM. either way a fresh air filter really breathes ( no pun intended) more power into your engine.

Free advise: always use factory parts on your Runner even if they cost more.
