Hey guys, does anybody know of a turbo charger that fits the 3.0 v6? I'm wnat to improve the power and mileage on my truck but I don't necessarily want to supercharge it why burn more gas to get the power when the ehaust can do it for you? plus I've just been reading a few horror threads from people with S/Cs thanks Aviator:tomcat: :bounce2:

There is a guy on the POR forum who was working on putting on a turbo on the 3.0.

Problem is these engines are already prone to the head gasket failure, and I don't think they are up to snuff for either a turbo charger or a super charger.

Personaly if it was me I'd go with the 3.4 Toyota swap or the Supra engine.

That Supra motor is a turbo I beleive, and puts out some serious ponies.

Corey, regarding the head gasket failure. Wasn't that a material compatibility problem? Would the Supra engine be an easy swap? What about the cost of a Supra engine? And I thought that the 3.4 swap was pretty extensive? Seems to me if you're going to go thru the trouble then it may be better to go with a small block Chevy or Ford V8. Lots more performance parts! Sorry for all the questions but I REALLY want to see a V8 in my 4Runner! But the swap is a lot of work so the turbo might be worth considering. Has it been done?

A 3.4 swap will be about the same if not less than a V-8 swap. The engine bay isn't big at all. Plus your drive train won't last. You need a new transmission unless you keep the rpm's below 3 grand. A 350 engine isn't much, but the cost of fabractions and parts will go through the roof!

Plenty of 4Runners have had headgasket failures, even '95 models that "supposedly" had the new headgaskets installed at the factory.

I side with Corey on the side of conservatism. Why push our luck with the higher cylinder pressures a turbo or supercharger would bring. One guy on the pirate board put a turbo on a 3.0, and last I heard it was still running fine. But I don't trust it and this old teacher is gonna keep the $3000 in the bank a while longer. Besides, I'm looking forward to the 30mpg of a diesel.

Cory? You wouldnt happen to know the dollars spent on that v8 conversion would you. Its has got to be some serious coin as he basically had to modify everything. Unbelievable.

What was that he was working on for a tranny?? I think it was a 6 speed manual and some weird transfer case??

Here's the scoop on the 350 or 4.3l conversions. Several companies offer adaptors. You'll need a new radiator and the associated adaptors, motor mount adaptors, bell housing or tranny adaptors, a wiring harness and exhaust adaptors. You can even buy short headers already built for the 2nd gen 3.0l to 4.3l conversion. I priced this a while ago and figured that with a junk yard motor that was running, was between $2000 - $3000 depending on how far you wanted to go. If you go with all the mods, it's about $2000 for the adaptors and $1000 for a used motor.

Compared to the almost $7000 that Toyota wanted to charge me to redo my stock motor, that seems like quite a deal actually!

That wouldn't be a cheap mod but something about 350 ft/lbs. of torque at 1200 RPM AND 30 MPG on the cheaper Diesel fuel really gets me excited.

Almost makes me wish my motor would blow up so I could do it.

Very nice looking.

One thing I have noticed on a lot of raised rigs with that sytle of bumper is they leave the radiator exposed, that is if it is the radiator and not a cooler.

I would no more wheel a rig like that if it is the radiator exposed.
Up where I go rocks always get flinged up, and one nice hit would cripple that.

Judging by the route used to get all the turbo tubing under the hood, I'd say that what you're looking at is a intercooler mounted in front of the radiator.

All he needs is an expanded metal or perf metal shield and it would be protected adequately. The expaned metal wouldn't hinder the airflow much at all...
