Tundra: Is it really as bad a s they say?
I've read a bunch of owner reviews from the Tundra. I'm in the market right now and have looked at the Titan, F150 and the Tundra. I have a Tacoma right now and love it. I've heard issues with underpowered brakes, bad O2 sensors, seatbelt issues (my Tacoma has this too) among others. Any insite into my buy? Titan and F150 are new models as well, who knows what issues will crop up with those? I find it hard to believe that Toyota is putting out a peice of crap.

Father in law has a Tundra he bought a year ago. Standard cab 4x4 full sized bed used as a work truck on the farm and such. Does well in this capacity. Power is just fine. We've hauled about 5000 lb with it, no problems at all. I mean none. Creature features all work quite well. Zero maintenance issues during this time of ownership.
Gripes:
Yuppy truck. Not available as a work truck with a basic bench seat and vinyl floormats. It's all carpet and cloth. Not what you'd want when you're covered in stinky mud from running a swamp trap line. That said, the interior cleans up very easily and very thoroughly.
Somewhat delicate. In that if you bash the bed with something it does dent. The metal just isn't as thick as the Toyota trucks of 20 years ago were. It's no thinner then the other new trucks though.

We have an 02 Tundra extended cab with a v8. Its basically the house/work work truck. It does what it its supposed to and does it well. Lots of room, lots of power, very quiet, very low maintenance. No problems with the brakes other then replace pads (at 45K miles).
If we ever get another pick up it will be the double cab tundra, only b/c the extended cab doesn't have any leg room. But then it hardly ever gets used.

Bud of mine has a 00 Tundra E-cab Limited. I believe he has had the exhaust manifold crack on him, othertwise. no problems. I have to laugh at the previous post about "Yuppy truck"...
This guy wont let a branch on a dirt road get within 5 feet of his paint, washes and waxes the truck twice a week, and you can EAT off his floor mats.
In so far as the think body metal. yep, I tihnk all vehicles are pretty thin these days, and we cringe how easily they may dent. Then again, its one way to try to reduce some of the weight to try to salvage some gas economy. Damned if you do, damed if....... shoot, just plain damned!!!

i just bought a used 2000 Tundra with Access Cab with V8. I love it, I don't have any issues with it except the seat belt not retracting right away. I get better gas mileage than my 95 4Runner i used to own. I get about 16-17mpg. Leg room in the back is not as bad as the Tacoma access cab. I wish I could afford the Double Cab but its way out of my budget. I am very happy with it, I wish I can afford a supercharger but the V8's hp is plenty enough for me.

A friend of my wife's has one (crew cab) - definitely used as a yuppy truck (though they do have a mile of dirt "driveway" and live on 300 acres in the Colorado mountains) but no problems at all. Her husband just bought a 3/4 ton chevy with the hemi ( :rolleyes: ) because it had more capacity for his plow. She kept crying about how much more truck the chevy was for the money, how the Toy was a rip-off, etc. But the Chevy has already been in the shop three times with (minor) problems while the Toy has never been back to the dealer since it rolled off the lot (her husband does the maintenance). She still maintains the Chevy is better (she's not the smartest thing) but her husband's only gripe with the Toy is that they don't make the Tundra as a super-beefy work truck (as far as suspension weight capacity, etc). He maintains it's a better truck.

I'm in the market for a family/work truck & I think right now $ for $ the Titan is probably the best value out there. I'm hoping they will be willing to deal as dealers get more on their lots.

The Tundra is what got me into the 4Runner I now have ! As I see it here are the pros and cons:
Pros:
Wonderful highway ride - better than the 4Runner !
Silky, torquey V8 (once you get above 2500 RPM).
Great fit (Always felt I was driving a luxury vehicle).
Best maneuverability compared with pickups from the "Big 3".
Decent gas mileage
Cons:
REALLY tippy in the corners (needs a swaybar on the rear)
4 speed tranny (the gears were just a bit too far apart)
Gutless under 2500 RPM
Front suspension just a bit too soft for off-roading
I guess I could conclude with the statement that if I ever needed another pickup, the Tundra is the only one I would consider...

I had a 2000 Tundra for 3 years and 45k. Had only one problem with the tow package wiring. The dealer replaced it under a TSB in about an hour. Had to buy the 4runner to haul the kids. It took me three days to sell the truck for full price. I sure do miss being able to light up the rear tires. The runner is AWD!
