TUNDRA Front Disc Brake Conversion

A friend of mine at a Toyota dealership in the mid-west wants to put together a "kit" for the retrofit of TUNDRA front rotors and calipers onto 4Runners with 16 inch wheels.

Can someone who has done this tell me how easy it is to do and what the necessary parts are for the conversion? Is any machining of the 4Runner front hubs or knuckles required? I am hoping it is a simple plug-and-play swapping the brakes and possibly changing only the dust shields.

It's plug and play. There's minor bending or cutting of the heat shield. Necessary parts are the rotor, caliper and pad. Easier mod and bang for the buck.

Edwin,
Thank you for the reponse. Did you mean dust shield/dust cover or heat shield. I don't know where the heat shield would be.

I have read your posts about this in past threads.

Now,
My understanding from other posts is that the 199mm caliper fits no problem while the 231mm ones that came out after the TSB require some shaving of the wheel. Is this true? It might be something you have to take into account.

Yes, according to a member (I think his call sign was Fingers) that just did the mod.

Ya the 199s will fit with minor cutting of the dust shield. The part you have to grind down or cut is very obvious when you try to fit the caliper. It is the half moon between the two bolts that mount the caliper to the spindle. If you don't shave down the dust shield then the inner pads won't seat properly. Other than that just get a standard set of tundra rotors and unbolt the old and in with the new. I read the post about the 231s but that requires alot more grinding and cutting.

Ordering the correct parts

I would like to make sure I will order the right parts for the conversion. Can someone confirm that if I order the parts listed in this post (Links to parts included) that I will get the 199mm brakes. The webpage lists them as having a pad length of 4.7". Thanks ya'll.

These were the same part numbers I used for the calipers. BTW, I used slotted Brembo rotors instead of Raybestos.

The 4.7" pads are for the 199mm brakes. The 5.3" IIRC pads are for the 231mm brakes.

If one were to use Tundra or Sequoia wheels, would they still need shaved? Or no? What about LC80 or Jaos wheels?

Thanks

Unless someone's done the 231mm conversion besides Fingers, it's going to be tough for you to get an answer. From what I've read, he's the only one so far to try the bigger calipers and pads, and he had the factory 16" wheels.

Personally, I wouldn't feel comfortable shaving the inside of any wheel, nonetheless, a wheel I actually paid for that didn't come on the truck.

But since the Tundras and Sequoias clear the 231mm brakes, why wouldnt tundra or Sequoia wheels on a 4Runner clear them?

The amount I had to "shave" on the stock 16" wheels was minimal and simple. If I had to do it again I would still go with the larger calipers but I believe either is fine.

Yes, 16" and 17" Tundra or Sequoia rims will clear both types of calipers without any modification to the wheels (you'd still have to modify the dustshield). Keep in mind the backspacing on the rims is different so you would need to run spacers to maintain the same position as the stock wheel.
