Wow BigFishAllDay what a write up. So much more confident after reading your post compared to others. This may have been answered somewhere and I just overlooked it so sorry if its a silly question. I have 05 Tundra wheels on my 3rd gen. I believe they are 17s. I should have no clearance issues with my wheels right?

No, you won't have clearance issues as those wheels were designed with those brake calipers in mind

Is it a downside to this upgrade ? It does not show up in many of the threads. It looks like guys have been jumping on this switch for sometime. I have to guess that there really is little or no downside to this.
I had the same "soft pedal" issue after the 231 mm upgrade. I was rather disappointed with the mod and i was positive i bled the brakes correctly. Incidentally, about 3 weeks before doing the mod my mechanic (ex toyota mechanic) told me the rear brakes needed to be cleaned and adjusted. So after doing the mod i had him adjust the rear brakes for 40$ and the pedal issue was fixed. Firm pedal feel and amazing stopping power. Would highly recommend doing the upgrade.

I've done the TBU with 231s on two 4runners so far. Dollar for dollar, probably the best upgrade I have done.

Except maybe the LED dash light upgrade. Certainly the best for the money and time spent to improve the everyday driveability of the rig...

I am about to do the brake upgrade to my 1997 4runner and need to know if my rims will clear the 231mm or if I have to get the 199mm calipers. Also are the rotors from a Sequoia the same as the tundra?

sorry...

No, those rims will not fit over the 231's. 3 choices: go with 199's, find some 5-star or flower rims (or 17" or aftermarket), or grind.... check out BigFishAllDay 's thread: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...rs-rotors.html

13WL calipers

there are two versions of the same number caliper, you want the late ones. The early ones do not have a lip where the rubber boot fits over the piston and they slip off easy hence the upgrade later.

I'm ready to do finish the mod but I'm hung up on which brand caliper to buy. So many options. Any opinions?

03 Tacoma brake lines for 13WL caliper

So what does everyone recommend using when upgrading the brakes on a 2003 Tacoma DC with 13WL calipers. I have the banjo bolts. I don't want to drill the existing banjo bolt. Should I use the Wheeler's SS brake lines with the special banjo bolts or the LC engineering Tacoma-tundra conversion brake line kit... What do you think?
Thanks in advance!

calipers

I'm not sure whether this will be helpful, but if you haven't acquired your calipers yet and you don't want to replace the brake lines you could go to 13WG calipers, as they have a different input angle, meant, I believe for banjo lines.
As per a post on T4R.org: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-ge...tml#post835440

The contributor mentioned they maybe more expensive, so it just might be easier to change the lines.
Can't really speak about what lines to use, as I never changed them, over at T4R, a few guys changed the flexi lines but most I've seen re-used their existing. Anyone lifting there truck, substanially, will replace the flexi lines with extended ones ie. Toytec Braided Brake lines also Wheelers Off-road lines...
Aside from the thread above, check these out, just for fun!

Thanks for the response. I've already bought the calipers so I'm leaning towards the Wheeler's brake lines.

BigFish writeup link from years back accurate to the T. Nearly all questions on specs and fitment answered in just one post. Should be a manual on its own. Thanks so much! One of the best upgrades I've ever done. I went the junkyard route for the 13WLs. Beware of 'as is' conditions. Had to drill out broken bleeder screw out of one and get new pad retaining clips. 4runner piston rebuild kit works on Tundra caliper. Skipped putting anti-squeal on the shims. No noise whatsoever, gotta be a scam. Vise grips on brake lines prior to switching over a great tip!

Can this work on a 92?

I live in the Bay Area and braking is king in this area as fast as I drive.

It's a popular upgrade for 3rd gens. For 2nd gens, maybe some articles out there or here on what pertains to your year. T100 came before the Tundra, so maybe that or sequoia, but my bet's on the former.

I've got these exact same wheels, 16", 5-spoke, bought off of Craigslist to replace my badly curb- and salt-chundered stock 16" split-3 spokers. My understanding is that these rims came off of FJ's, but maybe these are LC's after all, based on the info in Terminator's post following the one quoted? I'm trying to figure out whether I need to buy spacers for these or not in order to clear the 231mm Tundra calipers (I just cannot get behind the notion of hand-grinding the backs of wheels, for a number of reasons not least of which is a bad experience in the past doing that). I could have sworn in one thread or another somewhere (threads, threads, everywhere a thread, cloggin' up the scenery, breakin' my mind... they all blur together after a while LOL) that someone said that all FJ wheels, 16" included, clear the 231mm calipers because the FJ's only used the 231's. Whether this is true or not, I don't know, and I can't find the post I saw (or THINK I saw) it in. So it's a 2-part question - are these in fact FJ or LC rims, and if they are 16" FJ rims, will they clear the 231's without mods/spacers?
