Trunk lid/hatch swap

Hi guys, I need some help!

A few weeks ago I swapped my damaged 2002 4runner trunk lid/hatch for a 2001. It fit perfectly, but the connector wiring for, I assume, the defroster, wiper, and lock, are different. Is there anyway without splicing the wires that I could fix it?

Can you swap the components and wiring harness from your old hatch to the new hatch? Or maybe just the harness?

I opened up my old hatch and looked in to see if I could switch it. It looks like to pull everything out would take a while, because I would have to pull everything from the brake light, down to the bottom. I would switch the harness, but there are more wires in the 2001 than the 2002, so I don't know what I would be losing. Maybe I am just not thinking it through correctly?

If it were mine, I'd opt for taking the time to do it right and not cut and splice. Cutting and splicing is just inviting a wiring/electrical nightmare be it now or sometime down the road. I just painted my 4runner and gutted everything including the hatch for paint. It looks intimidating but like you said, it's just time you're losing but you'll know it's done right. If there are more wires in your '01 than the '02 then maybe you should swap out all the guts too, that way you know it's all compatible and you're not losing any function. For the 3rd brake light part of the harness, just get a wire coat hanger or some bailing wire to help fish that part back up there. Swapping the wiper should be a piece of cake, swapping the window motor and regulator might be a little more tricky if you don't know what you're doing. Not to say you couldn't do it if you took your time and thought it through though. Aside from that, the only things left should be your license plate lights and the plug that goes to the lock cylinder. I'd say get everything done yourself but the window regulator and motor and then grab a friend to help you for an hour to swap them.

Just my 2 cents. Just take your time, it should be a few bolts/nuts, some screws maybe, and some plugs. Careful of the little plastic retainers that hold the harness to the door shell and components as they can break easily.

Thanks! That is great advice. I think I will give it a shot, if not, I won't be missing anything really because I already currently don't have those functions.
