Truck failed smog, need advice
I passed my emissions testing with flying colors. everything was going good until he tested my timing. He said i was 25 deg. advanced, i should be at 10, i am allowed anywhere from 7-13.
I recently had my waterpump replaced, which means he had to R&R the timing belt but still used the original belt (it was replaced bout 20k miles before that repair). He also R&Red one of the pulleys. It doesnt appear that he touched the distributor. I havent touched it yet, but if i change the timing, will my truck run like a dog? It runs really smooth right now. Also, Is it possible that i might fail emissions? He mentioned that the mechanic might have put the belt on wrong too.... i dont know, he was a cool guy and seemed to know his stuff.
Any insight?

just saw your post... my truck also passed the test, but he failed me for timing being supposedly 25* advanced and too low an idle... my truck was in fact perfect as confrimed by myself and 2 mechanics @ 0* but my idle was low, it was 395 rpm......
i went back the next day and the guy gave me more crap but passed it.. then said it passed but it was running rich... and that the mechanic i talked to didn't know what they were doing... as they werent smog techs and stuff.....

the mechanic (hardly, was wearing regular pants and a semi-nice shirt) showed me exactly the timing, and i kinda knew what i was talking about so i knew he was doing it right. then tongiht i went to school and pulled out the timing light, sure enough showed the exact same results. i changed the timing to 10 and made sure it was idling right.

it is in some areas... california has the strictest laws in the country.... in some areas they run the vehicle on a dyno and test its real worl pollutants... they dont even check the gas production @ idle. they jsut do a running emissions test at 15 and 25 mph.. at idle noxious gas is produced pretty much the same even if their are engine mods.. .you wont detect engine mods until you get into running the car at speed.. thats why they test @ 15 and 25 low nad high speed.....
they do check timing and idle speed
they do check timing and idle speed

yay i passed. and boy did i ever pass. My HC showed as 4/4 @ 15 and 25. average is 19/12. CO measured at 0.00/0.03 average is 0.06/0.05 and finally my NO measured at 63/63 average is 136/124.
i adjusted the timing last night at school. man i cant believe how far off it was

I found the smog tech for my test had no clue on how to properly check the 22RE timing. Did not know about the timing check jumper, so I had to show him that, plus he had no idea what the timing was supposed to be in any event. Seems the '85 engine info in the smog check computer database is pretty thin. I think I'll make use of that next time, since I need to retard the timing a fair bit to pass the NOx test. I'll just set the timing to what I need and then tell the tech the timing I have is the "right" timing .

the tech i had said my timing was off.... i doubt he even checked it though... and he did have info on it. but wasn't sure on my truck as there was no underhood sticker with the specs
