truck or 4runner?
hi im currently looking for a 1st gen 4runner(85-89) and it seems all i see are rigs with about 160,000 miles on them.would this be really worn out? also im kind of caught between the 4runner and pickup, on one hand a 4runner could carry more people but on the other a pickup woud be easier to find plus maybe a little cheaper.

160 k is a lot of miles... but the yotas are famous for going way past that in mileage..... mainly the 22r or 22re engine, thats how toyota made their name for durability and longevity in the auto world.....
if you get one, do base research first, if it belongs to some 17 year old kid and is missing all sorts of parts and covered in mud and a rustbucket, probably not a good idea... if you find one that belonged to an old couple ho only drove it to the store in the winter, probably a better idea than the 17 year old kid

I bought my truck from the original owner who had ALL the maintance records for it. It had 230k on it but was and still is in excellent condition.
Obviously it was street driven for most of its previous life.
The general condition of the truck will tell you alot about how it was driven.

Check online for-sale ads. I found my truck within 2 hours of it being posted. Never had much luck finding vehicles for sale in magazines that turn out to not be sold already.
Refering to your original post. Do you know why the 88 is not running? If its nothing major and the new motor is actually sound then it would be a good deal for $1000.00
I would be cautious though as there are alot of electrical systems on these trucks like rear window motor, rear wiper motor, various switches and relays and many sensors on the motor, ect. and without the motor running who knows whats broke.

Auto-trader is where I found mine... granted the whole 4Runner itself had 186,000 miles, the engine had just been campaigned by Toyota only like 40,000 miles ago. So, it was a brand new engine (seller gave me all complete rebuild paperwork). So, yeah, check autotrader.com!
