TRD vs. Hayden transmission cooler
Is there a difference between the Hayden cooler and the TRD one other than the TRD box and the special mount brackets? If so, is the difference worth the extra money, ~$100?
I've also posted this at 4x4 Wire, sorry for the cross board post.

tranny cooler
I have a hayden one that I got from Pep Boys ($65). It looks just like the TRD one, but no mounts. I opted to zip tie mine in place, along the various supports in front of my radiator. It was an easy install, 30 min, and seems to be working just fine. I think the TRD one is ridiculously over priced.

I replied over on 4x4wire, but to sum it up, no I didn't think it was worth the extra cash. Lots of other info and opinions around here as pfdaxe mentioned too!

TRD
I am getting the TRD one just because it is OEM equipment and any mod that is non OEM can make them not honor the warranty on a repair, so no questions would ever be asked if something screwed up with the TRD my warranty would cover the repair. I also talked my dealer into matching the online price of $185. I told him if he wanted my business he would, if he didn't, he wouldn't. He did!

Well, I bought the perma cool one from Performance products, and from my understanding it's the worst kind I could have. Oh well, but I'll probably switch to the hayden sometime. Here's a pic of it to show you the difference:

I didn't see why you would want to pay more for the TRD unit when the Hayden is the same thing.
They can't refuse to honor the warranty (even if they may claim to) if you don't use the TRD one.

Stack
Stack type is proven to be superior to the kind that the TRD and Perma Cool ones are. You'll help your tranny out some no matter which you get, but just remember "Thousands of transmissions are ruined each year, and nine out of ten of them are due to overheating!" By the way that's Hayden's motto. I vote get the Hayden stacked plate heavy duty one. Pep Boys for $65.

Hmmm
Hmmm I was wrong, you are right. The TRD one is stacked plate, just not as big as a heavy duty Hayden. It's still what, $140 more?

I'd go with the heaviest duty stacked plate you can buy (mine was the 20K version).
I know they make up to a 30,000 version as well.

Cooler is installed
Well, I installed the cooler on Friday night. Definitely not the "1/2-hour install time" they promise in the instructions. Took me about 2 houre to do it but I ran short of hose, so I finished it up Saturday morning. Got the Hayden 678, which is the 20k cooler, same as the TRD model. Feel much better now that I have the extra cooling, even though we're heading into autumn and its getting cooler. And I think I even gained about 25hp from this mod!
One thing, the fluid that came out, while still pink, was looking very dirty since I couldn't see through it, but wasn't burnt. When should I have the fluid changed? Am thinking about doing it soon since we're taking a long road trip in October. I've got 32k on the truck now and this is the original fluid.

If you have never changed it the best thing is to have it flushed or if you are cheap like me you can just drop the pan, clean the filter out seal it back up and refill. It is not as good as a real tranny flush but it is at least good enuf to severly dilute any old fluid which may be remaining. From then on I usually just drain the pan and fill on a regular basis (@ about every 15K). Just MHO tho.

Like I said earlier, personally, I am going with the TRD so if anything ever happens bad related to the tranny the dealer can't opt not to fix it via my warranty because of a mod I did that was not OEM equipment. If you do have a warranty, that is an issue.

For that matter and going by what the dealer says, it would only benefit you if they also did the install for you. Otherwise even with a TRD cooler, they could claim that it was a faulty install that caused the problem.
But with that Magnuson-Moss Act, the dealer has to basically prove that whatever causes the problem was directly related to something aftermarket. If they can't, they have to cover it.

tranny cooler
well, if that makes you feel better- like it was said, in an earlier reply- toyota can't void your warranty. plus, even if you had mechanical problems- the dealer isn't going to care what name is stamped on the tranny cooler- anyways. i wouldn't even be suprised if the typical toyota technician, wouldn't even look to see what brand the cooler is! they will try to give you grief, no matter what- because that is what they do!- save the extra 100.00 bucks!!!!!!!!!
