Hi Guys!

The first gen TRD supercharger on my new truck has a growl to it, almost as if it has a bad roller bearing. I read on the forum here about how to buy the bearings and seals and just re build this nose unit myself.

Has anyone else done this? That thread is several years old, and I wanted to hear if anyone else had done it. I am assuming that at idle the supercharger should be almost silent. I would also assume that VERY few folks have had ANY issues with the internal bearings of the supercharger.

Anyone have some expertise to share?

hey man i just went through a complete tear down of my first gen charger.....luckily i did not have to replace bearings but its pretty easy to pull apart and service.....and can check each bearing seperately. and at idle sometimes the charger does make a slight ticking noise almost like a valve but as soon as you get on it a little bit it goes away and the whining starts.

magnuson is always a good location for service/parts considering they made the charger. there have been several posts of people getting complete rebuilds done by magnuson and being in the ballpark of 400 bucks. all the guys i have spoke with there are very decent and willing to help.

also gadget's site isnt too bad for some small tips either.

Be careful, with a complete bearing failure in the SC there is nothing to stop those broken needle bearings from going into the engine and destroying it.

I took the belt off of it this morning, and turned it by hand, it doesnt feel bad, at all. I have felt many bad timing belt rollers etc over the years, and this feels good. I just with it was a whine at idle instead of a Grrrrrr. Is there any one in Austin TX with a blower that I can listen to?

at idle mine makes a light ticking sound.....and once i get on the throttle it goes away right away.

maybe just try replacing the oil in the nose cone.....that's a pretty simple thing to do.....

just a thought.....but if you dont feel any "roughness" when rolling it by hand i dunno if there is any huge concern....

mine makes a slight noise at idle as well. I wouldn't call it a growl really...I dont know what I would call it actually! But my pulley seemed fine as well. I think its pretty normal...could be wrong though.

I just rebuilt my s/c nose a couple of months ago. It is the same as yours. It is a pretty straight forward rebuild but you do need a heavy press. There are several places that sell all the parts to rebuild them. When I called Magnusen they had about a 3 day lead time on a rebuild if you sent yours to them. (plus shipping time).
Gadgets website says that the noise comes from the slack in the gearing. Mine makes a little noise at idle also, but goes away over 1000RPM.

I don't have a press, although others have said that they just drove the bearings out. Worse case ill take it to a shop and have the bearings pressed in.

anyone have a video clip of how their chargers sound at idle? i cant tell if mine sounds right or not

Hawkflyer - I took several pictures of the rebuild. My intention was to write a tech article for the rebuild but I have issues with getting pictures posted. I'm not real computer savy. I could send them to you in an email if needed.
The bearings will come off the shaft with a rap of a hammer. The press will take care of getting the coupler side of the shaft off, if needed. Putting the bearings back in would be a lot easier with the press. It beats hammering away on it while everything is held in a vise.
