transmission temp gauge

So, for all of us with 96 through 98 runners, there is no option but to install a temp sensor and gauge to read tranny temps...

no scangauge option for us...

Anywho, I read after doing a search about the mechanical sunpro stuff and think that it might work just fine for me.

However, I wonder if an electric one would be easier to install?

No removing the center console and drilling a big hole in the floor.
Just have to find an existing hole on the firewall, and run the little wires through it...also have more mounting options...as I would prefer to have the gauge up on the dash somewhere, closer to eye level.

I found this, but unfortunately no customer reviews...http://www.amazon.com/Auto-Meter-574...097842&sr=8-25

I know autometer usually makes good stuff, so I would hope that this gauge would be accurate and that then needle wouldnt be prone to sticking

I guess my question is, has anyone had experience with this gauge or something similar and if so, how did the install go?

any pics?

I installed an Autometer electric Trans Temp gauge in my '98 4runner and it was easy. I used a Dakota Digital Trans Temp Sender Block and their Sending Unit, installed the block on the side of my frame with flexible rubber trans hoses. It's one wire from the sender, one to ground, and a switched power; then you can tap into your interior lights somewhere for the back lighting on the gauge. I ran my wiring along the lower part of my radiator support, then up along the left side of the engine bay, drilled a little hole for a rubber grommet, and ran the wires inside the cabin. I'm no electrical genius so if I can do it, anybody can.

see, now that is where I would have problems

I must be less of an electrical genius than you...cause I have no idea how I would rig up switched power, how to tap into interior lights for the backlighting...

suppose I'll put that project off for a while and do some more reading
