I know this has probably been gone over before, but I am not having very much luck searching old posts.

I have a 1980 4x4 with a 20R and the L43 4spd. I came pretty close to trading this truck off but decided to keep it and give it a second life.

Will a 5 speed transmission that was mated to a 3.0L bolt up to the 20R? It seems to me that it won't, but I am not sure so I need to ask.

Also, I have a lead on a 5 speed transmission from an 85 extended cab that had a 22RE. The truck is on a ranch a couple hundred miles from here. Is there a way to know what transmission is in the truck other than looking at the VIN tag?

I remember reading some posts here that some of the transmissions placed the shifters back far enough that bucket seats were needed and other models kept them pretty much in the stock location. I think I should be looking for a L52 transmission, right?

One more thing. Is it worth while fitting a 22R carb to the 20R? The carb that is on this truck now is a P.O.S. and drips gas a little and seems to run way too rich. It also gets a little flutter at higher RPM. I will probably look at a Weber later when I go into the engine, but with lots of stuff that needs done and the engine running pretty good I would like to spare some expense on the engine right now if it is worth while. Any other carb sugestions?

Won't bolt up.

I'm not sure on the 20R, but the turbo truck's R151F tranny's bell housing will allow you to bolt the v6 (R150) tranny to a 22r(e)(t).
