transmission sound
hey guys, question for ya:
i know my truck. i know its sounds, i know what it should and shouldnt sound like.
lately ive been picking up on a strange sound during any kind of acceleration which i fear is a bad sign for my transmission.
its faint, but it sounds like the old looney toons cartoons when a plane was going down on its way to crashing. know what i mean?
it also sounds a bit like when certain cars are in reverse at higher speeds than a crawl, they make that whirrrrrrrr noise.
is that ok? am i worried for no reason? is this a noise thats always been there, im just noticing it more now?
thanks.

Could be your T-case too. Just a thought, but you might want to give this a shot in a safe area:
Set your E-brake. Put your tranny in Neutral or Park. Shift the T-case lever to Neutral. Put your tranny in 'D', and give it a little throttle. If you don't hear the sound, the T-case MIGHT be the culpret. I emphasize 'might' because this is not a definitive test, but it might give you a better indication of where the noise is coming from.

ill leave it running, shift the tranny in N then the 4wd shifter in N. then when im done ill move the 4wd shifter back to 4H, then the tranny to D.
thats what i always do when shifting things around.

bearings in the tranny will make a howling noise when they go out.
i know 5th in a lot of older toy trannies was always a little noisy no matter what, but if it becomes really loud you have a problem. if it howls in 4th gear it's the input bearing(4th just locks the input and output shafts), if it howls in the other gears it's probably one of the countershaft bearings. either way, you'd be looking at a tranny rebuild.

its consistent throughout... its like a winding noise that is only really audible when accelerting at a consistent pace.. then it quiets when shifting, and starts again.
but really today made me think its nothing cause its so quiet and the tranny is functioning perfectly.. ill keep my ear on it. thanks!

I had a similar problem. Does it make the sound with it in neutral and the clutch out? It whines in all gears but 4th?
My problem was the knuckle head who owned it before me ran the tranny low on oil so the input shaft and main shaft were toast and the cluster gear was done. The tranny shop said that it would cost more in parts to rebuild than to buy a reman tranny. Runs great now with a new tranny.
