Transmission slight shudder when stopping?

Hi, I have a 2002 Tacoma 4x4, 4 door and when I come to a complete stop the transmission seems to slip or disengage. At first I thought it was the brakes, but it is not.

I looked at the shifter and it physically shifts a bit when I come to a stop slightly.

This only happens when I am in Low, 2nd, or Drive going forward. I tried it in reverse and in neutral and it does not happen.

It is hardly noticeable, and if I apply a lot of breaking pressure I do not feel it.

I was thinking it could be the torque converter?

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Bill

So the truck shudders when you are at a stop and have the brakes on?

AND the shifter does what you say?

I know that my shifter moves a bit under braking as well. That just has to do with the linkage moving when you apply the brakes and the truck nose dives a bit which moves everything. Hard to really explain but all te 4runners and tacomas i have driven/been in have done the same.

The shuddering could be low oil?

No, actually the truck slightly shudders right after I have come to a stop after gently breaking. It does not keep shuddering while I am stopped. It is like something is disengaging and it is subtle. If I come to a stop fast I cannot notice it.

Yes, the shifter moves or shifts slightly as the shudder occurs right after the truck comes to a stop.

The fluids all seem to be fine.

I have not driven other Tacomas/4Runners so maybe this is normal? I know my automatic cars do not do this?

Thanks
Bill

every automatic car ive EVER driven will shudder while stopped in any forward gear. You have to remeber that the engine is NOT in netural and is still trying to push the car forward while but you are using the brakes to overpower this..its going to create a shudder. some cars more than others.

if you put it in neutral it wont shudder at all because theres no resistance on the brakes

I'm almost certain that what you are feeling is "axle wrap". It's inherant of leaf-sprung rear axles. Do a little search on axle wrap and see what comes up. Fear not, it's very unlikely to be your transmission.

89Macrunner, thanks for the info. Gapguy, thank for the info. I'll look up axle wrap, however the sensation I am getting is in the front of the truck where the transmission is.

Does yours? Both my 4runner and my tacoma don't shudder at all in D while stopped. Normally when that starts to happen the oil is getting old and i replace it and it goes away. Same goes for all my customers...

but like you said some more then others!

Weasy2k, thanks.

Maybe I am not explaining or describing the system really well.

It does not actually shudder, it is more like it slips forward.

I drove it again and going down a hill and stopping it is worse. I noticed it is the shifting lever that moves a bit, it is that linkeage. Once I am stopped it does not keep moving

Thanks
Bill

Johnny, no there is no thud. I took it into the dealer today and they said it was normal. The shifting lever shifting a bit forward when stopping was normal. The slipping forward part was described as "driveline binding feeling" and is attributed to the larger 265x75 tires I am using. All in all the truck is fine.

Thanks everyone
Bill

I've had this same sensation with my runner - it feels like a clutch pack releasing somewhere in the tranny. If you try to slow down really smoothly, you'd feel a slight jerk as whatever released. You wouldn't notice it if you came to a quick stop.

I can't say what made it go away - hopefully it was the 60k tranny service - but I haven't noticed it in a while. I chalked it up to being too anal

My '03 double cab 4x4 tacoma has the EXACT SAME ISSUE!

usually whenever stopping, and starting, there is a jerk in the transmission.

After searching on the net, I've come to find out that dealers are telling owners that this "jerking" is normal. Its very frustrating, because it feels like something needs to be repaired.

Here's a link to a bunch of people who have had the same issue:

so i guess there's no hope for fixing this prob.
