Transmission question
I recently had a Maxicool HD tranny cooler installed in my 89 Toyota 4x4 (Auto V6), and since then have noticed a few small issues.
1) After driving for 15-20 minutes, when it shifts into Overdrive, it hits HARD. Like the entire truck jerks when it happens, but only when going into Overdrive.
2) It seems to no longer like shifting into 2nd gear when it's cold. When I am in drive and floor it, it will bog and not downshift. When shifting from 1st it skips 2nd and goes into drive. I can manually shift into 2nd with no problems. However, when it's warm it goes in and out of 2nd just fine.
I'm not sure why the tranny cooler has caused this to happen. It seems like a weird problem to me. I have checked the transmission fluid level a few times and it's been good.
Any ideas where to look or what might be causing this?
Thanks!
-Bryan

Let me add, the transmission fluid and filter was just changed/flushed the same time the tranny cooler was installed. Prior to adding the tranny cooler and the flush/fill I had neither of these problems.
Could it be related to the type of fluid they used? If they used some ลลลล off brand fluid might that be the problem?

How long has it been since it was changed last. I've heard that you start having problems after it's changed if it's been a really long time. That it's better to leave the old stuff in there.
The not shifting into 2nd might be because the fluid is having a hard time reaching operating temps now.
Read you manual closely on how they want you to check the level. I've had cars that want it running some that don't, some that want it cold, some that want it warm, some that want it hot, some want no driving within an hour of checking some that want it checked after 20 miles ect.....

I don't know when it was changed prior to me taking ownership back in March. I am starting to think it's the cheap fluid they used, and I am thinking about trying some high end trans fluid to see if it makes a difference.

I'm having the same issue. After driving 10 mins it goes into Overdrive finally. I brought it to a tranny shop and they suggested changing out my coolant, flush it to make sure its clean and not blocked. Also to change out the thermostat. I'm doing that this weekend and will let you know how it turns out...hope someone else here had the same problem and can shed some light....could be a bad sensor too...we'll see.

Bryanr, did you ever get this resolved? I want to do a tranny flush and add my cooler at the same time but I don't think it was ever done at 98k miles. BTW, it's a '99.

I haven't had any recent episodes of it acting up in the mornings, so I don't know if it has resolved itself, or just gone away temporarily. Sorry.
