transmission interchangeability

my dads tacoma trd 4x4 v6 5 speed is having shifting issues, grinding into first second and third. my brother has a 94 pickup v6 4x4 5 speed.
my question is, can I swap 94 into the taco. for the time being or permanetly.
I work as a chevy suspension tech so going into this trans is going to be new to me and my pops needs his truck.
I've been into manual trans before but any help or tips on the repair would be greatly appreciated.
thanks. Mario

What you describe sounds like it may be a clutch that's not fully disengaging, rather than a tranny problem.

Where on the clutch pedal stroke does the clutch engage/disengage? If it's very near the bottom of the pedal stroke, the clutch is most likely the problem.

Another test involves depressing the clutch in neutral with the engine running, waiting a second or two and then shifting into reverse. If gears grind when shifted into reverse, it's most likely the clutch.

I'd start by bleeding the clutch slave and checking it for leaks. If this doesn't do the trick, there should be an adjustment trunion somewhere on the clutch linkage in the cabin.

Good luck.

khaug, maybe right....try adjusting the clutch pedal in the cabin...the rod may not be pushing far enough into the clutch master cylinder...

removed the trans last saturday and tore into the internals, and found the first/second shift fork lose the bolt that holds it to the rod fell out. the only thing that was holoding it in befor was the trans case. can see some grooves.
also found the third fourth rod bushing came out of the case too.
reistalled the bolt with some locktite and re seated the bushing. put it all back together and shifts like new.
