The transmission that goes bump in the night..

First off, may I say that I'm glad to see that this boad exists. I owned a Jeep before and I was praying that there'd be another board that I could share info on when I got my runner.

To make a long story somewhat short, I bought a used 99 runner ltd with about 72000k on it.

It worked beautifully for me for the firt few months that I had it, however, over the past 3 months, I've had a strange problem with the transmission.

When I accelerate in the morning, the truck doesn't want to shift out of 2nd gear. The thing will rev to 3 grand, and then in order for it to shift up, I'll have to take my foot off the gas.

Another strange thing is that is happening about 75% of the time when I come to a stop. I'll be at a stop sign and take my foot off the brake to accelerate, and then I'll feel a hard thud in the back. It feels as if the tranny isn't downshifting to 2nd gear. the first time this happend I thought I got hit from behind, it's that hard.

I've taken it to the stealership, and with my warranty, they put in a new driveshaft. I have no idea why, but they did. The problem still exists.

I'm wondering if anyone has had any similar problem? The one mechanic there that knew his stuff said that there's probly a buildup of gunk on one of the valves. I didn't change the tranny fluid when I first got it, but in hindsight, I should have...

Any thoughts?

Thanks!!

Kevin.

Both issues are normal for this vehicle. Try a search for details.

Your ECT type trans will not shift into 3rd until warmed up.

Surprising to see a dealer gave you a new drive shaft. Try lubing the zerks to reduce the thud.

Do you know what I could search for?

I'm pretty surprised that this would be common. The bump that I feel when I take my foot off the brake is quite hard. It's strange that it only started happening a few months ago...

I havent' had my tranny fluid changed so I guess that would be good to have done.

As for the drive shaft, yeah it was pretty strange. I've got ECP on it, so I thought they might have given it to one of the mechanics as a make-work project or something... strange. Oh well... I didn't have to pay for it...

Many thanks!
