Transfer case removal?

I am doing a transmission on my 1997 4runner this saturday, and my repalcement transmission does not come with a transfer case so I have to swap it over. is there a write up on removing the transfer case? also, I will be doing a fluid service at the same time. what fluid does it take? standard 80w90?

Thanks, Max

Its relativly simple... Un bolt front and rear drive shafts, un-do the shifter linkages, undo all the wires connected to it, then un-do the 12 or so bolts holding it on, then bench press it down.

Find the FSM page, its more descriptive than I am

Easy enough- Only transfer case I've ever pulled off was on my landcruiser, and that was bassically a press fit, and ya need a special tool to pull it off. big pain in ass. but this sounds easy enough, and hopefully I wont be wasting to much time doing it.

I will have pictures to follow! will be doing it this Saturday at work.

No, nothing press fit here, just have to un-do a whole lot of bolts. They trickiest part is probably taking the shifter off in the center console. you need to un-do the transmission shifter to get to the xfer case shifter. Then all the wiring harness, be extra careful there, don't want to rip any wires. The top left bolt is a PITA, I used three extensions and two cv joint thingers, and a friend and it came off.

Well the swap went fairly well. just have some small things to take care of tomorrow at home. This is a shop I used to work at, and my buddy still works at, built in tool boxes, two post air lifts, and an air powered tranny jack. great equipment and makes doing a transmission a breeze...

Didn't have to use my back to lift anything. I am only 20 but trying to prevent any further damage to my back!!

anyways things left to do,

Drill out seized exhaust header bolt
Install new exhaust system ( old one was rusted and this was a great time to do so...)
install interior trim
adjust linkages
install front driveshaft
all the under panels
clear codes(had to drive home with no exhaust due to busted down pipe bolt causing CEL to come on)
and I think thats it?

oh and dissasemble old trans to figure out what went wrong, and maybe rebuild it and sell it to my other buddy...

Quick question

Does it matter what way you put the drive shafts back in ? I’m about to take them off right now and I heard you had to mark them before you took them off but then if I’m putting a new transfer case in it won’t have the markings ? How do I know where to align the drive shafts ?

The driveshafts themselves are balanced - not the connection to the flanges. As long as leave the driveshaft halves keyed the same way they were (to each other), you’re fine.

Oh ok thank you I had all the nuts out and the last one is stripped badly I can’t get the rear driveshaft out and there’s no room for the specialty tools in there so I’m probably gonna grind out that’s last bolt it’s driving me nuts haha so hard to do this job all alone
