Transfer case and color of oil

I had the transfer case on my 2001 done at 20 and 40k at the dealer. I did it last week at 65k with 75w90 Valvoline dino. I kept hearing a whirring sound (only in 4whd) so I thought the case might be overfilled and drained about 4 ounces out. This oil was slightly gray after one week. I don't remember the color of the oil at 65K but don't think it was this gray. I hardly use the 4whd except in rain which hasn't happened much in Austin. Any thoughts on this or should I just drain it and refill again with a different brand.

Actually it is on pavement. The 2001 had a different 4WD system. It's basically AWD unless you lock it. I don't lock it on pavement

I think it's suppose to work like that but you can still feel it binding up if good traction is available, which it is most times when it rains.

Hi,

Without the Multi-Mode 4WD system, the transfer case is locked whenever you engage 4WD (4H or 4L). So you get driveline binding when you do that on hard surface/pavement.

HTH.

The 2001 has multi mode. It also has a lock switch for the differential which would cause the binding. I have hte noice without engaging the switch
