tranny question!!!

hey guys,

my question for today is... Is there a difference between 2nd gen 2wd auto tranny and 3rd gen 2wd auto tranny???

The reason I'm asking is because when my tranny went south on me, my mechanic got me a GREAT deal on, as he said, "newer" tranny model than the one I had. He installed it with some minor mods to it (I'm not exactly sure how he did it, but it's a fact). He said it shouldn't matter, but I want a second opinion.

P.S. I have 91 4Runner auto 2wd V6

Thanks in advance.

I think he just had to modify the mounting brackets, but not the tranny itself.

The transmission is the A340. It is basically the same in both 2nd and 3rd gen. On the 2nd gen, 4wd, there are some extra pilot holes drilled out for fluid to pass to the transfer case.
The only difference I know of between the two is this. In the 2nd gen there is a 2 magnet reluctor ring; in the 3rd gen its a 4 magnet. The rings and sensors are interchangable between the two (this must have been the mode). The ring is in the tail section, and not in the transmission. If your mechanic knew about this, he's pretty smart.
This transmission is also used in many other foreign and domestic cars. If it works don't worry.
