tranny noise

i don't really even know how to describe this but i'll do my best. my truck still runs PERFECTLY. i have no problem shifting or driving whatsoever. but ever since my last offroading trip it's been making some new noises. whenever i'm in 3rd gear (again, it still functions properly), there's a buzzing noise. when i'm in 5th gear, it's the same buzzing noise but louder. it also still functions properly in 5th. you wouldn't be able to hear it if you had the radio on cuz it's not too loud. just loud enough to know that it's there. 1st, 2nd and 4th are fine. any ideas?

How many miles on your rig? I have about 180,000 and mine does the same thing. I think it's a sign of the tranny getting worn and needing rebuilt. My 3rd gear has been pretty noisy for a couple years, but 5th gear just started recently.

Arrow hmmmm...

speaking of noise, some times i can hear some sorta noise comin from my center council that sounds almost like grinding, a horrible sound but only some times and not loud at all, any sort of sound coming from the center council, by the shifter (automatic) is not a friend of mine!! any suggestions? Tranny fluid is A ok as far as the dip stick tells and it isn't really all that bad, but with all my no months of mechanic schooling and complete lack of automotive knowledge, my ears tell me it just aint normal. Erik

no grinding in mine. just a buzzing sound. but the reason it sounds like it's coming from your center council is cuz the tranny is right underneath it. unless of course you have a ticked off rodent or something in your center council. haha.

Is the buzzing noise more like a gear/bearing whirring noise?

Having owned toyota's since 1980 I've found that they change very little.
Both my 80 2wd and my buddy's 89 4wd 4cyl had the front main bearing go between 150k-200k. My 89 2wd 6cyl that i bought with 150k already had a rebuilt tranny in it(at 138k).

The design is the same. The bearings used in my 80 and his 89 where the same.

The input and output shafts run inline.
4th gear is quiet because it is 1 to 1. There really is no 4th gear. It just couples the input and output shafts together and there is no sideload put on any gears or bearings.

Power for 1,2,3,5 have to run down to the counter shaft/gears then back up to the output shaft. 1 and 2 aren't loud because speeds are low. 3 and 5 can get loud.

I ran mine mine till it got so loud and loose that it got stuck in 4th. One of the shifting keys had popped out of the clutch hub from the slop and vibration.

I put in my spare which had 100k on it but alot of that time was behind a built 20R with TRD stuff. It only lasted another 30k before the same noise came up. Tranny #3 was built from the best parts from the two. The front and rear main bearings are the same so I just used both rears which were fine.

I belive the problem with the front main bearing is lubrication. This bearing sits in a counterbore on the outside of the case and is then covered with a housing. Any lube has to go thru a hole. It does not sit in or get splash lube like the other bearings. I think the best thing to do is keep the lube level high and change the pilot bearing in the flywheel everytime the tranny is off.

Sounds like something similar to what I had over the last year, no problem driving her just the whirring noise that came during 4th and 5th if I remember correctly maybe even 3rd too.

In the end after a heavy session offroad (not a rockcrawlin session, a drive the t!ts off her on an oval dry dirt-track session) the next morning she was reluctant to start but when she did, she wanted to edge fwd.

As it turned out, (R150F gearbox) the 2nd gear synchro was stuck in and not releasing so maybe the whirring was a warning sign.

Now the R150F is exploded on my workbench since summer, and I have a G54 from an '86 pickup doin famously in the R's place
