tranny gauge mount

hey all

I am ordering a tranny temp gauge and was wondering a cool place to put it. I thought about buying an A pillar guage but there are 2 pod and $70 some dollars and I only need on gauge mount.
I thought about under my ash trey but I am going to put something else there.
I could put it under my CD player since I have a single DIN in a double DIN. But I like that space for other stuff.

After crossing these all out I have thought of 2 good spots.
-on the ceiling where the garage door clicker is supossed to go right next to sunroof open buttons. I figured I would get one of those gauge pods that are universal and mold it to it. This is my first choice
-The second idea would be the same universal pod and put it on the steering colum. I like this idea as well but it would be harder and would have to look better since you could see it better than the gauge above the head.

Also let me know if you guys have put your gauges anywere else

tyler

you could get one of those universal single pods and put it on the pillar, probably the easiest/quickest solution. i'm toying with the idea of putting a gauge pod on the steering column, but so far everything i've seen or purchased has been too long for the top of the column, especially with the tilt option. see if you can find something shorter in a single pod that would work there. they sell steering column gauge pods on ebay for certain vehicles like the WRX and Mustangs, but i don't think there is a big demand for 4runners and Tacomas for them to start making them, guess it's fab time! i've seen a pic of some one that did two gauges in the roof console and eliminated the sunglass holder, looked really nice. i think Gadget was the one that had all the gauges you could possibly cram into a 3rd gen "cockpit", check his site for some inspiration.

also, here is a pic of where i put my gauges:

you can see all of the pics in this thread:

dam pattycakes. That looks good. How long did that take you to do?
How long are the gauge pods you were looking at? Do you think they are too long for the compartment I was talking about?

you could probably do this in a weekend if you worked on it full time and had all the materials/tools. this took me forever because i started it right before winter and i was working 60hrs a week, so things progressed slowly. and, i was experimenting with different things to see what would work, so a lot of trial and error burned up most of that time. one of these days i'll post up a step by step of what i did. i still have the first one i tried with the gauge slots pointed straight and 4 instead of 3, so i'll cut that apart again and start the write-up with pics on that one, and maybe just sell it when i'm done. i'm sure when i'm done with it i'll probably have made about $.07/hr with all the time sanding and sculpting but it will be nice for some one and a step by step for others out there that want to add about 10 lbs of bondo dust to their lungs and stomach and ears and eyes.

i'm not sure of the exact length of the pods i've looked at, but when i put them up on the top of the steering column cover they were longer than i wanted. i could have trimmed the flat parts but the actual pod piece itself was too long. the ones listed on Summit from Autometer look shorter than what i've found so far or you could find a generic dual pod on ebay and hack it and build it up again, shape it and paint it. not the easy way but it's about the only way if you want something customized and where YOU want it in the vehicle. i'll try to find that picture of the gauges in the roof console and post here.

good luck!

ps - here is a pic of a 2 gauge pod for the 4runner/tacoma:
i believe it's a Lotek from gaugepods.com

found the roof console gauge install:

seems to be from a member here named tour4fun, don't know if it was done by that person or just a picture posted by them. it looks really nice. my only question is, once you make something like that how do you match the OEM texture to the new material? all i did was spray some textured paint on mine, doesn't look bad but it also doesn't match the factory look either.

Anyone know where to find the dual mount pillar? I keep fidning single ones. I want a Volt meter and a oil pressure gauge. I have had two alternators go and never a battery light.
