Tranny Fluid confusion: 2.x quarts or 4 quarts??
I just drained and replaced my Tranny fluid. According to the owners manual, it requires a smidge over 2 qts, however I bought 3 qts and it took all of them and is still a Qt short. What's the deal? Am I doing something wrong?

The book for my 01 , 2.7 auto says the same thing but it is a missprint as discussed on another thread where others had the same results as you and I.On there advice I bought 4 quorts before changing it. It took two quorts to show up on my dip-stick as full cold. I drove it for about 5 miles and checked it again and it took the other two quorts to fill it. Mike

Everywhere it always states 2 quarts but it is wrong. I work at a auto parts store and all my manuals says 2 qts also.I recently did my tranny filter change also. It took 4 qts for it to be at the normal level. I think Toyota had a misprint or they got their specs wrong.

yup the manual is wrong.....i put in 2 quarts of atf+3(i forgot what fluid type i needed and the screwball at autozone said atf+3 when it should've been dexron III), anyways i got back on the road with only 2 quarts in and my a/t temp light came on, i pulled over and put 2 more quarts in and no problems
one pleasant side aspect of this adventure is that atf+3 makes the clutch grab a little softer so now when i put the truck into first or reverse it doesn't lurch like it used to, wierd
