I made an attempt to chnage out my leaking seal in the t case but couldn't get the large 38mm nut of. The companion flage moves and can't ceep it from moving to remove the nut. Any suggestions?

I made a tool like this:



If you have an old joint, maybe you could attach that and put a bar through it for leverage.

I think if it's on the vehicle you should be able to put it in gear and gain leverage that way.

Great idea just wondering if I could buy some thing like that from harbor freight for 10-15 bucks. Cottoman trans quote me $325 to change out the rear seal and service the trans case. Bit high. should I replace both seals since I'm in there??? Any one know the part numbers I need?

a long pry bar is what i used it was about 20"s

Why not block the tires, put it in 4WD, in gear and then try to loosen the nut.

Its worked every time for me.

I'd agree... not sure why that method won't work for you. The tool I made was great once the transfer case was off the vehicle and on the ground.

An air wrench is another good idea, if you have the compressor and such to run it.

I'd call your local dealer with your VIN, they'll be able to get you the part numbers. If you go down there, they will probably pull up a diagram of your cases on your computer and let you "see" what seals you need to buy and what it would take to replace them.

Thanks for every ones help! Will give her a shot tonight if I can get my kerosene heater running. temp out side is a cool 31 degrees with snow in the air.

I made a flange holding tool out of a piece of 1/8x2" steel flat bar from the local hardware store. Just lay the bar along the flange, mark and drill two holes and bolt it on:



I have two sets of holes, one for the smaller u-joint flange pattern and the wider ones for the CV flange pattern. Bolt it up to the flange and rotate it up to contact the frame and then use a breaker bar and 6-point socket on the nut.
