Trailer light problem

I have a 99 4runner with what looks like a factory hitch and a factory wiring harness. I boat regularly and late last season I lost some functionality with my trailer lights. I've since tested them and I have tail lights but the blinkers and the break lights are not working. Sometimes they'll flicker.

I did a search here and didn't see much on it. What I am trying to determine is where the harness goes to trouble shoot it. When I get under the truck I see the wires in a corrugated plastic sleeve heading off under the drivers side rear fender wheel well area. I can't tell if I need to remove the corner bumper and mud flap to follow it up in or if I should remove the plastic wall on that side inside of the rear cargo area on the truck.

I currently do not have a field service manual for the truck because money is just to tight so I was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction.

Thanks

I can't tell you where the converter is mounted but I can tell you that I had to have the stealership replace mine 3 times (under warranty) on my 2000 until I had one that finally worked right. Hopefully, someone here can help you out.

When mine went out, I went to the stealership to get a replacement, but they wanted way too much for them, then I found this

part#43415 $34.95

It's located behind the plastic interior panel, left side cargo area....

I found the wires and the converter behind that left side in the cargo area. I was able to reseat the wires and the blinkers and brake lights came back to life. Even if it doesn't last at least now I have access to it. Thanks again guys.

ps you guys ever notice those cheap plastic clips holding the moldings on usually break.

I've got a similar issue...my trailer lights are acting goofy and I'm not sure where to begin looking.

-When I turn on my headlights/parking lights...BOTH trailer lights come on just fine

-BOTH turn signals work just fine as well

-However only the driverside BRAKE LIGHT works.

So obviously both lights are getting power and they're both getting the turn signal...but only 1 has a working brake light. Any idea what could cause that?

I did notice a wire running under my cargo mat to the passenger side. I assumed that it was the feed to that side. Mine had a few areas that were compressed. Maybe that set of wires in yours has been damaged. If you unscrew the plastic skid plate you should be able to lift the rug and see that set of wires and inspect them.

Maybe wiring for trailers is a weak area for Toyota or something. I know that on my 2001 Tacoma the first time I hooked it up to my boat trailer everything worked fine. The only problem was when I used my right turn signal in the truck it activated the left blinker on the boat. This was not a trailer wiring issue as it worked correctly with every other vehicle used to tow it. Rather than mess with the trucks wiring, I just purchased one of those 2 or 3 ft. wiring extensions and swapped the turn signal wires on it. Problem solved plus my wiring has a little more reach if needed.
