Toyota 4Runner vs. Jeep Wrangler Unlimited

Check it out on cardomain! Post a comment and stick up for the 4Runner.

Everyone is saying Jeep all the way, obviously they don't know what they're talking about..

stock, in the rocks, if BOTH are 100% stock, then the jeep would crawl up the 4runners butt and out again. thats IN THE ROCKS. damn wrangler STILL having the solid axle suspension up front. thats the ONLY advantage.

Rubicon ....the newer 4runners are not built for "off road". I love my 3rd gen but i feel that things changed when the 4th generation came out. I know that they are very capable but the Rubicon does have Dana 44's and lockers from the factory. I have owned both (wrangler and 4runner) and would say that straight off the line the Rubicon would be better in the rocks and muck. The 4runner is clearly a better vehicle but i was basing it off of stock Off road performance.

(From the Factory)
Quality- 4Runner
Dependability- 4Runner
Perfromance- 4Runner
Offroad Cap.- Jeep

the jeep come from the factor as options, front and rear lockers, 4:1 t-case gears, Solid Front Axel, removable top, sway bar disconnects. They are unfortunately not even in the same class, the jeep is built for off road and the 4-runner is not, in 1985 toyota went away from a rock rigs.

x2...new stock 4runners are not even close to being as capable as a new stock jeeps...face it, a new jeep would go over the Rubicon no problem, a 4runner would struggle a lot and would get massive amounts of body damage...ground clearance, departure/approach angles, sfa, lockers fr and rr, low range tcase, all give the new jeep a large advantage offroad. For DDing, the 4runner wins hands down.

Wouldn't you have to compare the FJ to the Wrangler and not the 4runner??

EDIT: I guess they did that already.

I agree. However, I believe Toyota has a great compromise between road and rock. I think both are great, though. I actually would love to get a 4-door Rubicon. However, it's a Jeep, so I don't think I have that much time in a day to maintain it. I just wish Toyota would come out with a soft top rig (FJ40-ish vehicle, and with an actual removable top, not the faux top like the FJC's).

Cardomain is asking, what is the overall better vehicle, which of course is the 4Runner hands down. So be sure to drop a comment and let them know what you choose, so the 4Runner can win!

Yeah, Well the lockers only lock in 4lo. That is one complaintfrom jeep owners that have them. Im sure they will or have come up with a way around it tho.

Its comes down to want you want to use your vehicle for. My wifes H3 does pretty damn good too. Im yote all the way, trying to get her to trade it in, but we ran Moab, Hells Gate, escalator even, stock and made it, no tow. She has 4.1 transfer, rear locker, and 4.56 front and rear, and traction control (like a-trac). IFS is the only downfall but I was still impressed. Yotas just hold their value and last longer than any domestic I have had in the family, and honestly how often are you runnin the Rubicon or Moab? Yota! jeep = cheap

Jeep Rubicon is really good in "off the lot" condition. But, my toyota will last 3 times as long, you can drive it on the highway without rattling your fillings out, and its resale is way better. besides its completely functional for almost every aspect of life, unlike the 2dr wrangler.

Pure offroad = Jeep

For Life = 3rd Gen T4R, all day like OJ.

everyone knows that the older for Jeep's the better! The new engines are total garbage and have major issues. My dad just sold his 88' Wagoneer LTD and that was a very solid truck. 300k + and my friends dad just bought it to throw back on the road.

I don't actually know that's true. I sold a Jeep before buying the 4 Runner. I got rid of it because I didn't want to make the $400 payment any longer. It had a 3.7 Dodge engine in it and it ran great. It had much more power than my 4 Runner and the gas mileage was reasonable. It would also pull my 4 Runner backwards. I actually pulled my Dad's Mitsubishi out of the mud several times with that Jeep. His Mitsubishi had a full front differential too.

IMHO, the older Jeeps were junkers. The 70's, 80's, and 90's Jeep engines were all under powered and prone to breakdown. That's not to say that your Dad didn't have a good Jeep. He may have been lucky though.
