01' Runner: Tow dolly or trailer

i am looking at buying an 84' Toyota 4Runner in the next week or two. my questions whether or not i can tow this truck back on a tow dolly with my 01' 4Runner? or should i find a trailer and maybe a bigger truck? it should be about 1600 miles round trip.

I'm not sue if the Runner's brakes will handle towing on a dolly or not. and is not wired for trailer brakes at this time.

Honestly, if you have access to a bigger tow rig by all means take advantage of it.

The 84 you plan to tow is very close to the weight of the 01..the 3.4 isn't exactly a powerhouse, and already has lackluster brakes.

Slow and steady, thats the way.

i have a couple of diesels i should be able to use, and was leaning toward that route any way. just having a hard time finding a good trailer with working brakes. trailer brakes probably not much of an issue with a 6spd Cummins dually though?

Use the diesel, you save all those miles on your 4rnr. By the way what kind of tranny cooler are you running in the 4rnr??

If you have access to a diesel like that, then spare your 4runner the agony of towing something that big with no trailer brakes. Also if the full trailer is an option, I definately go that route instead of just using a front wheel tow dolly.

i have towed home 3 gen 1 4runners with a tow dolly in my 2000 tacoma 3.4. farthest trip was from new hampshire to Pa. it will do it. not neccessarily jump for joy at the thought, but it will. im certainly not saying it was the best thing to do and dont recommend it, i just had no other choice at the time. if i were in your shoes and had access to a nice big diesel rig id have used something like that in a heartbeat!! having the weight, the power and balance will make it a much MUCH safer and more enjoyable experince. plus on the way home youll probably get better mileage than towing with your 4runner. i was tempting fate every time i went on a "drag-it-home" excursion. if theres a safer alternative by all means use it.
