Torsion and coilover cranking....

Is cranking the torsion bars to get a lift pretty much the same thing as cranking coilovers to get a lift? Why can you crank the coilovers more than the torsion bars because the cv angles would be the same for both vehicles right? Can you crack an a-arm by cranking the torsion bars? Thanks for the help.

Hey, you're going on the pismo run, right?!

Basically, yeah, cranking the torsion bars is the same as adding a spacer or adjusting the giant nut on a SAW. BTW, just to dispell a common misconception, this does NOT increase the preload.

The difference in cranking the two is that the torsion bars are on 1st and 2nd gen 4runners, and the coilovers are on the 3rd gen 4runners. The 3rd gens have different control arm geometries which keep the CV angles under control. The CVs are also different and they may (or may not) allow for greater angles.

Yeah, I was wondering why the later gens with coil suspension could crank up the coilovers so much. Also can you crack an a-arm by cranking up the torsion bars? Just wondering. Thanks

If you are going to crank your stock torsion bars you definitely will feel a rough ride. Aftermarket bars are fatter and made more for taking the adjustments and offroading. As far as cracking an A-Arm, I highly doubt it. All you are doing is moving the a-arms in a downward angle, which gives you the lift. I once cranked my Downey bars all the way to the bump stops, then realized that`s why they offer the low profile stops to provide more clearance.

dont crank your t-bars much. i did some serious cranking to get the front end up to match my 3in downey rear kit, and man did that suck . as soon as i got home i put it back down to roughly stock + 1/2in. not too bad anymore, my rear end is now a little higher than the front, but its a helluva lot better than either alternative. (butt sag or crappy ride/trail quality)
