Tire width/rim width

Evening, guys.

Just a quick question - I've got factory 15 inchers on my 4Runner. I am assuming that they're 15x7, but I'm not sure. I am looking at a set of 32x11.50 BFG's, but they've got a chart which gives the rim width range as 8 to 11 inches. Do I need to look for some new rims or what?

Factory is 15x7 and yes you can fit the 11.50 tire on it. The rule of thumb I've heard is you can go 4 inches wider than the rim with the tire - that is why a lot of guys with old Broncos run 15x8.5 with 33x12.50.

There is a thread on 32" tires on 2nd gens - all those guys are running the wider tires on stock rims or aftermarket rims that are similarily sized. Just be sensible when you air down so you down pop the tire's bead. Look at my sig - I went with that size because it is essentially a 32x10.50 so I can still air down low and I have no rubbing even on compression.

What BFG and other tire companies tell you is a myth. The want to convince you that you need to buy wheels as well which benefits their retailers. I ran 31.10.5 BFGs on 15x6 rims for years. I'm still alive to talk about it. Some tire and wheel salesmen will tell you you need 8 inch wide wheels for 10.5 inch tires. They are salesmen and just want your money. Profit margins often cloud the truth. Salesmen often lie. Its part of the game.

I now run 32x11.5 tires on 15x7 wheels. 11.5 tires are too wide for 6 inch rims.
