Tire size and fuel?

I'm going to finally have to replace the tires on the 4Runner as well as finally put my lift on. I have 265 Nittos Terra Grapplers on there now and I'm thinking of going with the 285 in the same tire with a stock wheel. I know the 285 would look a lot better but I'm fearing horrible fuel mileage. Has anybody actually tracked mileage when they changed tire size? I'd like to know if it is like 1/2 MPG or if I'm looking at 2-3 MPG difference. Thanks for your help.

on another brand truck I was getting 16 mpg with 235s then switched over to 31s and got around 10-12 mpg now there may have been other factors in it as well winter verses summer

On my 92 runner I went from 31's to 33 BFG AT's and I am getting about the same mileage. Of course that is after I do the recalculations associated with speedo and odometer being off because of the size change, but it comes out the same. With out the recalc it comes out worse.

I get 16-17 with my 265s with mostly around town driving so I'd guess if my truck had 285s I still should get 14-15 with the same style driving.

I was wondering about that. How many people remember that the spedo is going to be off everytime you change tire size.

I did the calculation for mine when I went from 265/70/16 to 285/75/16 and it was a 7.3% difference in circumference so now every time I check my milage I just multiply by 1.073 and it gives me the corrected value.
