Timing belt & water pump quote

Just called a local Toyota service center to get a quote on changing my timing belt (76,000 mi.) and water pump. They quoted me at $1200. They suggested also changing the cam and crank seals (+$200). Is $1400 a reasonable estimate (for Hawaii) and should I change the seals, too?

1/2 that from a dealer would be reasonable.

+ $200 for crank and cam seals? they already have the timing belt out! I did my own timing belt/water pump job and I did replace the crank seal, but not the cam seals (74,xxx miles at that time). those seals are only a couple bucks, and can be installed in a few minutes (the cam seals would take a little longer, but not much).

Its not even that bad of a job, I thought about putting an ad out for 3.4 timing belt jobs since it was so easy, but we moved and now have no garage

Well, during my one trip to Hawaii, everything seemed to cost about twice as much than the same thing in the states, so maybe that is about right. Sounds like a ton of money for that job to me, but I know prices are higher there. What is the labor rate at the shop you got the estimate from?

I had my timing belt changed for 500 bucks the fist time at the dealership... I didn't change the waterpump the first time but I was able to do the waterpump and timing belt myself for under 200 dollars myself this last time.

I just got a coupon from my local dealership for a timing belt replacement for $301.95. I'm sure that doesn't include a new water pump or any other parts. But, I'm thinking I could be out the door for around $500 complete with new pump, belts, hoses, etc. I just turned 92k on my 2002, so it's due.

$1400 sounds like motivation to learn how to change a timing belt

What about Dog the Bounty Hunter--doesnt he do timing belts out of his trailer also?

around here $550-$600 is standard. that's timing belt, water pump, and new drive belts, and includes toyota antifreeze. unless your cam seals are leaking i wouldn't change them. labor in my rate also runs from $75 -$80 an hour. i'm sure it's well over $100 in hawaii.
