Timing

Hi everyone, I just want to start by saying this is a very helpful forum and I just want to say thanks to everyone that is part of it. I have a question about timing my 89 toyota 4runner. It has a 3.0l V6 and I was wondering how to go about it. I have put the jumper wire between the two terminals and then I put the light on it and I got it to 10 deg btdc but I think that my tps isn't working right. Is there any other way to get this timed without using the jumper wire or what can I do to get my runner running right. Thanks in advanced!

No there isn't. You need to use the jumper wire to bypass the computer to be able to do the timing. The computer continually adjusts the advance while the engine is running and that is why you need to use the jumper. Your TPS sensor not working would be a different issue altogether. You best option would be to do the timing. Reset the computer by pulling the EFI fuse for over 30 seconds, run the vehicle and see if there are any other codes. On my 92 3.0 I run the timing another 2 degrees advanced to compensate for me romping on it and any wear in the gears (it has 380,000 kms). I get more low end power and better mpg. I have don it for 7 years now. Hope this helps, let me know.
