Ticking / Clicking sound under acceleration

On my '02 4R w/ SC I am hearing a ticking sound when I accelerate. It sounds like it is coming from the right side around the glove compartment area. This is a new sound and happens at very low speeds --- 0-30+ mph. I figure it is some odd anomaly and _not_ a PING or KNOCK. It can't be a speedo cable noice because it is on the _right_ side. Any one experience this?

Boy, this is an old thread. My problem was pre-ignition! I guess in these 6-cylinder engines it is ever so slight, but it happened every time I tried opening the airbox, be it via the daeck plate or a less restrictive air filter, or if I got a less than Premium tank of gas. You also want to make sure that you have no vacuum leaks. However, since your engine is NA, you should not be having this problem. You need to determine exactly under what conditions and at what RPM this is happening at.

Yeah, I decided on using the search feature and this was the closest match to my situation.

I get the ticking when at the begining of acceleration when I lightly press on gas. I discovered it driving around in a parking lot looking for a spot. Goin pretty slow. Dont get the noise when Im hard on the gas or coasting. Maybe its jsut drowned out when I get on the gas.

Ill note the RPM later today and get back to you. But off the top of my head I think it happends from 500-1500rpms

Ok I noted that the ticking happens in all gears from 1500 to about 2500 rpms. At its peak, rpms is at 2000rpm with ticking fading after that.

Any Ideas? Could it be pinging due to DR Z mod with capped FPR?

My best guess right now would be to seal up your airbox and reinstall your paper filter, then see if it continues. Also, I did not realize that doing the ISR mod would require caping the FPR. That does not seem right to me. Did your preignition start right AFTER you did these mods, or at least the last mod you did? What was the last mod you did?

Here is a link to updated ISR MOD

https://www.yotatech.com/forums/show...ht=capping+fpr

It didnt start right after the mod and that was the last mod I did.

Ill try higher octane.

Did you notice the improved performance Galen speaks of ... REALLY? I really can't say what is going on since I am not looking at your rig, but I would check for vacuum leaks and a possibly around the ISR tube as well as possibly reversing the process (go back to stock) and see if the pinging goes away. I think it is nuts to go to higher than 89 octane if you do not have to. JM2C

Improved performance? I dunno cause I dont have anything to compare to. When I did the ISR mod, I capped the FPR with it. Im gonna try 89 and see what happens.

... try 89 !!!

What octane do they tell you to use in your owner's manual?

Galen told me that he did not think it advisable or fruitful to use the ISR on my SC'd engine, BUT it did improve performance and I am pleased with the mod. I told him of my observations. Also, it did not create noticebly more intake noise. Good luck unraveling your mystery.

I wonder if it's an exhaust leak? If you do have one, it will make tick noises as you are accelerating.

IMHO ....

Seal up your airbox and put back the OE paper filter. CHECK FOR VACUUM LEAKS ... cracked or punctured lines, open ports, incorrectly routed lines. Go back to a stock baseline and then start adding things back in. IF the condition has disappeared. JM2C ... YMMV

The deck plate mod with factory air box and OEM filter made my 99 Limited clack, tick and knock (whichever you prefer) under heavy load at low RPM's taking off suddenly, you could also pop the throttle at idle in drive to ask something of it and hear an obvious engine clack, put the deck plate cap back on, no clack ping or tick, I noticed no performance gain using the deck plate mod. My 97 SR5 has just a cheap oiled cone filter and no clack tick or pings ever just different injectors for that year I assume, both vehicles run well and are well maintained. Are you Supercharged like the OP from 2003.

man I have a stock 2007 that just started this same noise. I know its no exhaust leak because I've changed long tube header gaskets on my 96 cobra and that took 10 hours for a $5 part. Help? And not on the Ford. Haha.
