Thump after complete stop...

My 98' 4runner with 260000 has a "thump" that occurs after coming to a complete stop then releasing the brake. I have greased the driveshaft 3 times with 3-5 pumps in each zerk over the past week and I still have not seen any grease coming out of any joints and the thump has hardly improved. Should I continue to grease the fittings until I get it flowing? What are my options?

Drive line bind.

I belive its the splined area of thr shaft not being greased well enough. And most do not have grease zerts

Either pull it apart after marking both halfs for balancing reasons and push some grease into the female side and coat the exposed splines.

Or carefully drill an area and install a zert in the shaft where it will grease the spline.

You just need to grease all the zerks on the driveshaft.

Hit them good until the greas just starts to come out of the boot.

For the main driveshaft zerk you will see the driveshaft extend while pumping it up. Keep pumping until it stops expanding is what I do. Then drive it for a little bit and hit them all again.

Don't overdo it but just do it till you feel it is full.

I'm a bit weary to just keep pumping in grease because I've read some other threads talking about the possibility of creating too much pressure if you over do it. Another possible cause is that my rear brake shoes have oil on them after the axle seals leaked. I just got the new seals today and it sounds like the shoes will need to be replaced as well based on what I've found in other threads. I have also read that the thump/clunk could be from the brake shoes sticking to the drum but I can't find anyone confirming that the issue was resolved by correcting the leak and replacing the shoes. Has anyone had this same issue resolved by replacing the shoes after being soaked in oil???

Obviously do the seala and brakes first.

Kinda putting the cart before the horse on this one....lol

Get that seal set at the correct depth (look it up) or you will be doing it again sooner than you like.

I had the same problem with my '02 runner 9 yrs ago, I took it to the dealer. They said to much greese was pumped into the spline so when you applied the brakes, the rear axel twist was compressing the air in the shaft and when I would ease up off the brake, the compressed air would pop the axle back into the original position. At first, I thought they were lying to me because it really made me think the tranny was downshifting with a thud sound that you could feel, when I let off the brake. After pumping as much grease into it as you have...I'd say this is your problem...good good luck

So I have the new axle seals and drum shoes ready and I thought I would drain and refill the rear diff while I'm at it. I read somewhere on here that the correct socket is a 6 point 24mm. The largest socket in my set happens to be a 15/16 12 point that fits with a minor amount of play. Am I asking for trouble if I dont use the 24mm socket?
