Thinking about going with a supercharger...
Well, after breaking down and getting cable after ~6 years of doing without, I've been watching way too much Spike and Speed television. So, I'm thinking about breaking down and installing a SC. Since my 4runner won't be seeing much offroading anymore, its a little easier to justify having a bit more street performance. For those of you that have one, is it worth the hassle and the increased cost of premium gas?

I'd wait for the gas prices to fall personally... but definately get one. You won't regret it. I personally do not have one, but have riden in a few that do and its worth it. Though... remember there is a good chance you will be doing some fuel mods also.

I have one and looooove it. Gas prices will always be high when you have an SC. I have them right now for $1950 for the 3.4Ls if you are looking. Let me know what you decide I can be reached via my signature.

Yeah, I realize I'll probably have to go with Gadget's Underdog performance package, plus a transmission upgrade as well. Not a cheap road to start down...

Yeah it isn't cheap but it is well worth it after you blow somebody out of the hole!

My milage improved, but you have to run premium. Maybe its a wash. I promise you certainly won't regret the decision the first time you go to make a pass on a two lane up hill road. Go for it! The 3.4 won't be around much longer I predict.

You can sell some of all the offroad gear you don't need to sponsoer a S/c :-)

My mileage went up as well. I did my SC without any other mods, mainly because I wasn't hitting the 1/4 mile or anything. I just wanted more oomph. No problems.
And what's this about backing off the off-roading?!? You've been building it as an off-roader and a SC can also be used off-road too. <grin>

Hey Gene,
Its not that I'll be getting away from offroading, but the FJ-40 will be my main trail rig sooner than later. So... the 4runner won't be seeing as much dirt as it used to.

There is a thread here that shows the SC going for $1800+ at a Toyota dealer in DFW. However $1800 can put some really nice mods on the FJ.
Dump the money on the 40 and leave the runner a stock street queen. he he

The supercharger sucks. I hate it.
It sucks being able to pass a V8 Dodge on a 7% grade.
It sucks being able to dust a Honda with a fart-can exhaust (I can do that in my commuter anyway)
It sucks being able to show a Mustang who's "Boss".

David - do it. I'm across the edge now and stopped fighting myself saying "nah, I dun't wanna"...
It's a bit easier of a decision for me since I already have the SMT installed which I can use to handle the ping issues. Then I can install 305 injectors & the fuel pump later and use the SMT to tune for the greater fuel-flow.
...but those gas prices really suck.
ehh... Do it!

Damn good price on the SC. Im curious if anyone with a 4Runner or Taco with more than 100,000 miles on there rig installed an SC. If so how well is your engine running?

I have SC with URD kit plus header and exhaust and I love it. Just don't ask how much have I spent so far on all these mods? I dyno-ed the truck and I got 229 rwhp which comes quite handy when you need it. So if you have the money just go for it.
YOU MUST DO THE FEUL UPGRADE (URD) with it.

Yeah, I am a tinge concerned about the effect on the overall life of the engine. Ideally, I'd just keep dumping money into both the 4runner and FJ-40 at the same rate, and hope for a big raise at work! Since I only commute about 6 miles round trip to work, paying a bit more for gas wouldn't be too bad...

I'd guess the overall effect on engine durability is negligible especially if you run synthetic Mobil-1 or Amsoil and don't abuse it. Just my 2 cents. Any decision yet Mad Chemist?
