Thinking about auxiallary lights.
I'm thinking about adding some auxillary lights to my truck. I was out in the woods the other night and would have liked some extra light.
I have a brushguard that already has the mounting holes. All I have to do is buy the lights and wire them up. I'm not too knowledgeable when it comes to wiring, but I have read Corey's article on wiring auxillary lighting and I think I can do it.
From what I read here, most have recommended the Hella 500s. I see ebay has them at around $60.00 for the kit. Is that the going price now? Anyone have a reason why I shouldn't buy those? I only plan to use them on an occassional basis.

Nic,
Where are you in Alabama?
I have Hella 500s fogs installed with clear stone shields, and some Hella 500s driving waiting to be installed. For the money, you can't beat them. If you are close enough, I'd be glad to give you a hand installing them. It is easy!

Brian,
Thanks for the confirmation and the offer of help on the lights. As you can now see by my profile, I'm up here in Decatur-at least 2 hours away. If you were only a little closer I would definitely take you up on that offer.
I know Tuscaloosa pretty well. Spent a lot of time there and even lived in Northport for about a year. I'm actually from Perry County, which is not too terribly far from Tuscaloosa. Small world.

Well, if you are seriously interested in the help you can PM me. I have some friends in Gardendale, which would be halfway for both of us and we could meet there. Hella 500s are definitely the way to go!

A small world indeed!
Brian, thanks for the offer. I'm in the process of finding a set on eBay. I don't know how long that will take. I'm in no big rush.
You are too kind to offer to help. Many people aren't so generous. Maybe when I get them, I can swing by Tuscaloosa when I go to see my folks. It really wouldn't be much of a detour.
Just a thought.

Hey Brian,
I bought some lights off eBay and they arrived Friday. I couldn't believe how quick they arrived. Price and shipping was $69.00. I also stopped at the Toyota dealership and believe it or not they had a factory light switch. That's a first for me. I took it as a sign to proceed.
So........., I decided to try the wiring myself. At work, we have an enclosed garage with pretty good lights and heat that I could use to get out of the cold.
The installation took me quite a while. Nothing was too terribly difficult, I just wanted to proceed carefully. I started at 9:00 pm and was done by 2:00 am. Please don't laugh. If I did it a second time, I would be be a little quicker.
Anyway, after getting everything wired, I flipped the switch and both lights worked. I was quite amazed. I think I have them adjusted pretty well.
Thankfully, I was able to use the info from Corey's write-up and your site to do it right. I still appreciate the offer of assistance as well. After going through this ordeal, I realize you're a better man than me.
I do have one question though. The diagram with the kit shows one washer of some kind on each side of the cross bolt. All I got with the kit was a bolt, nut, and lock washer to go through the plastic light body. (In addition to the big square one with the nut and lock washer) I was able to tighten the lights down adequately enough to secure the up and down movement of the lights, but am I missing something? Just wanted to make sure.
