thinking about a 3rd gen

Ive only had my 2nd gen for 4 months and I love it to death but i need more power and when I was looking for a 4runner I test drove a 3rd gen and I loved it but I didnt have the money. But I will be getting promoted at the beggining of the year so I think I want a 3rd gen and I have some questions.Looking for a 4wd 3.4L.
Do they all have limited slip or just some?
If just some models then how do I tell which ones?
which models have the hood scoop?
and any suggestions on what to look for?
I read the 4runner history and everything else I just want to know some specifics. Let me know what you guys think!
Thanks

the scoop is the sport model, usually has matching painted bumpers as well.
I have the SR5 V6 with 4wd- mine came loaded with sunroof.l
99+models have revamped console, front bumper and headlights.
If you will be 4wheeling you will want the locking differential which is not that common. I think the 4wd models have slightly beefier suspension.
While All 4runners are nice just make sure it has all the features you need. there are plenty coming off lease nowadays so you will be able to find one in good shape.
Good luck

Re: thinking about a 3rd gen

None of them have limited slip. However, rear lockers are pretty common in used 4Runners that I've seen around here.

If just some models then how do I tell which ones?
For the locked ones, there will be an "RR DIFF LOCK" button on the dash, left of the steering column. Only available on the '96-'00 models.

which models have the hood scoop?
1999+ Highlander/Sport models

and any suggestions on what to look for?
A rig equipped with a locker and hood scoop, if your piggy bank permits.

More specific: under "information" click on "history". It will tell all the options/packages offered for all 3rd gen. years.

Just an FYI, that hood scoop is no moe functional than the park bench on your teenage neighbor's civic. Just more drag if anything. I wouldn't seek out one like this, just consider it a bonus. I would seek out one with the real options you want, that are functional.

I kinda bought my Runner a little hastlily and might sell it in a year and look for one with the rear locker plus if I did it over I would have looked for one with a few owner installed goodies like flares (if not factory equipped),bug guard, roof rack, etc.

I'd really like to find a '99-'00 with the multi mode auto/locker plus a few other amenities that make them enjoyable to live with.
