Thermostat changing

This is kinda a stupid question but do you have to remove all the coolant when ya change the thermostat or can ya just take a little out until its below the thermo. level and then change it. Dont really want to have to take it all out if i dont have to. thanks.

You don't have to remove it all. Hell, on my truck, I just remove the thermo and let the coolant spill out when I pop the elbow off the thermo housing.

Hope this helps.

You don't have to remove all the coolant. But, it's less messy if you put a bucket under the valve on the radiator and unscrew the valve. I just drained mine completely and replaced it with new 50/50 coolant/water. This way, you experience less of that "burning coolant" smell. Well, maybe you like that sorta thing...

Out, or counterclockwise. It is not designed to come all the way out of the radiator, so once you get a good flow going you have opened it enough. Also, take off the radiator cap before you do this, so it drains faster.

Where's the best place to buy the TRD Thermostat? I've heard of one place, but I can't seem to find it again. Anyone know?

Any dealer can get it. Not sure who is the cheapest on-line. I checked with one of the local dealers and they quoted me $60 and some change plus tax.

So I better ask where this thermostat is actually located, so when I get mine, I can replace this thing with ease. Anyone have pictures or details on how to do this swap?

Chris,

The T-Stat housing is located right where the Lower Radiator Hose attaches to the Engine. It is held in place by (3) 12mm bolts. You'll need a short extension and flex-head ratchet wouldn't be a bad idea either.

I don't have any pics, but it's really easy to find and to R&R.

Hope this helps.

FYI:

I just received a quote for the TRD t-stat from Jay Marks Toyota (toyotaworld.com)

The retail price is $60.77 and they sell if for $52.35 + shipping.
