Is there much different between a 1st gen supercharger and the newer versions?

I've had the original supercharger on my 97 4runner for the past 7 years.
Since I don't know much about engines etc, I had the dealer install it way back when.

I've never done anything to maintain it, but my goal is to start doing work on my own truck

The power increase is great, but it always rattles and clatters early in the morning or when cold at a low idle.

Does the newer version (black?) fix this problem?
Are there any other advantages in switching to a newer supercharger?

thnx

my black one is silent except under boost - then it lets out that beautiful whine... it doesn't rattle or clatter whatsoever...

i'm taking it off due to high gas prices and i'm regearing anyway, so i won't need it.

want to buy it?

i'll have it off within two weeks, and i'd sell it for $1400 + shipping. it would come with the dynamic tensioner, the standard pulley, belt, etc - everything you need to install it.

i also have a 2.2" pulley and a 2.0" pulley that i'll sell for $50 each.

it will come in the original box w/ the original instructions as well.

it has about 15k miles on it w/ no problems at all...

PM me if you're interested and i can send pics...

Hmm.. while tempting, I need to save my $$$ to put on that Tundra lift you came up with.

I'll prob be contacting you in the next week or so to get some of those spacers.

Question : How would re-gearing be affected if you left the supercharger on?

it would be screaming fast and would kill my mileage since the skinny pedal would always be on the floor...

a regear w/ taller tires will negate the "need" for the extra power that i got from the SC. by taking it off, i can go back to using 87 octane instead of 93.

Andy-

What type of tuning parts are you selling - if any? I will be doing a SC'r swap and I am going to need some URD stuff. Thought I might see if you had anything.

Thanks.

i only have a 2.2" and a 2.0" pulley.

$50 each. you MUST have the complete URD kit to run either, and the 2.0" isn't advised by URD due to excessive boost.

Cool thanks. I didn't think you had any URD stuff because if I remember right, you had no pinging problem. Have you tried ebay with those pulleys? I saw one on there the other day going for a good amount.

What you're hearing is "normal" considering the age, it really doesn't have anything to do with it being a 1st or 2nd (or later) S/C, it's just normal wear of the bearings in the nose.

It can be "fixed" by rebuilding the nose. It's a simple process and Magnuson sells a kit to do it.

Hit up Gadget's S/C maintenance page for more info:
