Thumbs down Terrible Surf

From the time I bought my 1992 ssrx surf it never ran properly. First it was the turbo not comming on, then when it was fixed, it worked for a week before it was damaged. I replaced it and that one had to be overhauled also. Then the head went. It began to overheat and smoke execssively. Took it to the garage and replaced the head, changed the injectors, overhauled the radiator, had the diesel pump serviced and replaced the rings. IT STILL SMOKES. Now i'm told the pump may be defective since it is an electronic pump that has no servicable parts. Since I purchased this surf in January, I probably only drove it for a month. I hope this is not the norm for these vehicles, I really like them......at least I used too!

I know how you feel, when I purchased my 2nd gen (22RE 5spd) awhile ago, 6 months into the purchase, I was having problems here and there, something wasn't working, there was a noise here, it does this, it doesn't do that and etc. By the end of the year I was ready to lease a 4Runner or buy a Rav4, I gave it one more chance, had the engine rebuilt, had every part of the engine and drivetrain replaced. After all that, the truck ran good with no problems for 5-6 years, it made 3-5 annual trips to PA for 3 years and didn't miss a beat. Last year I had to sell it, because the rust was getting out of hand in rear fenders and rear door. To this day, the new owner of the 2nd gen hasn't touched the engine at all, other than maintenance. Don't let one bad experience change your mind about Toyotas. Toyotas are very dependable and reliable vehicles, its rare to hear a Toyota giving customers problems. Just have faith in your rig and hopefully it will run good soon and last you for another 10+years with no problems

Cash4, you probably got one that was poorly maintained and severly abused. Who ever had it before you probably knew that there were problems and instead of fixing them, dumped it off. Toyotas will last a long time IF they are maintained properly. I have had mine for 9 years now and it only let me down once when a sensor gave out. Good luck to you.

Update

Thanks Vato and Paul, I know Toyota is very dependable. I took it to another shop and they have decided to re-do the entire job that was done before. They claim the first mechanic charged me for liners but did npt replace them and the engine is now throwing oil. They have decided to replace the entire block and the turbo. Hope it works this time.

Cash4, I hope they are doing this work for free since they are the ones who screwed up.

He said he was taking it to another shop to re-do what the previous shop did before...doesn't sound like the old shop is going to have to pay for the ˟˟˟˟˟ty job they did before

Not going to sue, down here the courts take too long. I guess I have to chalk it up to an expensive lesson. The shop that has it now says most of its jobs are those that other garages messed up. I should get it back by weekend so I'll post a report then. ...
and Sil23, thanks neighbour,
