Question Technical question about transmission kick down cable and using 04 trans in an 02

Hi,
I have a question for anybody with transmission experience. I'd like to swap a 2004 trans that lacks the kick down cable into my 2002 truck that does have the kick down cable.

Is this something that can be switched over externally or are there internal differences that would require a transmission tear down?

Thanks

First off why are you swapping trans?
Second do you have both said trans? Do you see and differences on them? What model transmissions are we talking?

Both transmissions are A340E from 5VZ-FE prerunners, but one is 04 and one is 02. I have both transmissions, the 02 is still in the truck and I'm driving it, but I'm pretty sure it's ready to go. Shifting is getting erratic sometimes and there was metal in the pan.

I haven't compared them side by side, but they look the same to me, minus the kick down cable missing from the 04 trans. I was hoping to get an expert opinion before I pull the trans in my truck. I don't want to get it out and then find out I can't use this other one.

I'm guessing the 04 is electronically controlled? I'm not thinking you're going to be having too much luck with this, unless you can get the correct signal to the trans ECU.

They're probably very similar mechanically, just the hydraulic control mechanism isn't the same.

I was thinking the cable mechanism might bolt in where the solenoid is now. I may have to start unbolting stuff to be sure. I figured there might be a transmission expert on here that has seen them both or somebody has tried this before.

Take a look through the trans teardown in the FSM - http://web.archive.org/web/201101022...ttora.com/FSM/

I couldn't figure anything out for sure my the FSM. I think the only way to know absolutely is to try. If anyone knows about this, please chime in.

I really don't want to pull a transmission without knowing I can install the other one.

Are you sure you have a transmission problem? Not a sensor issue? I'd make sure it's something internal before replacing the trans

Yeah, I'm sure it's the trans. There is metal in the pan. Still hoping someone knows if this 04 trans is going to work.

I suspect the difference is not in the trans, as much as in the engine and ECU. I am not familiar with the '04, or even auto trans in general--I avoid them--but the absence of the mechanical cable for kick-down on a throttle-by-wire engine does not mean the kick-down FUNCTIONALITY was eliminated. It could have just been incorporated into the ECU throttle control and transmission shift logic. So perhaps what you need is an '04 ECU running the show. This could create a host of other issues, however.

This is just a guess and worth exactly what you paid for it.

Well, I checked where the cable goes into the trans and there is a cover screwed in place on the 04 trans. The cable can still mount there. I just don't know how it connects inside and if the provision is still there. I would have to open up the trans to check, but I'm not sure what to look for without opening up the 02 trans to compare. Anyone have a pic of an 02 or older trans kickdown cable connection inside the trans?
