technical question about bilstein 5100/5125 adjustable height shocks for lift

So I've been researching suspension setups for a 3rd gen 4runner, and have discovered many different methods of lifting the vehicle.

I'm pretty sure I have this correct in my head, but just wanted to make sure I was not making a mental error since I don't actually have the coilovers in hand. The Bilstein 5100/5125 style shocks change height by having a moveable collar on the shaft correct? So by moving the collar up and down to change the height, it changes the distance between the top plate and lower springmount so that there is more preload on the spring thus resulting in a higher ride height correct? How is this method different than using spring spacers such as in the toytec kit if the same spring is used in both cases?

I wouldn't worry about it since they don't make them for '96-'02 4Runners with stock coils.

Edit: At least thats what I've been told by Steve at Sonoran Steel who sells them WITH tundra coils to be run on a 4Runner. I was warned to stay away from the taco
5100/5125's as they are valved differently and wont perform well on the 4Runner.
which is why I'm confused as to why Toytec sells them under the same umbrella.
