Tacoma's 190hp vs. 4runner's 183hp 5VZFE?
Quite simply I can't find any info on why the 4runner v6 makes 7 less hp and like 3 lbs less tq. than the same year Tacoma? Itake/exhaust differences? Intakes look the same to me. Stricter emissions or somthing?
Just wondering why my dads 95 tacoma lists more power than my 96 SR5 4runner? Same 5 speed manual tansmission. Thanks for any info.

thats true, that wouldnt affect it if its measured on a bare engine at the crank, it would affect it at the wheels. hmm.

Weight has NOTHING to do with horsepower and torque. Yes it has an effect on acceleration.
Im pretty sure these engines are dyno'd on a stand with just the exhaust manifolds on them. The differences in specs are probably from different SAE testing specifications for different years. The new tacoma used to be like 260hp now due to new SAE specs. its only 240. The engine never changed.

They might have changed the Standards for measuring Horsepower around that time. It may be measured at the flywheel for the Taco, and maybe at the wheels for the 4Runner. Just a thought...

Yeah I know the rear diff is the 4.10 because I found the original window sticker in the glove box today. Sticker price was $32,000 too! YIkes!!
Anyone know what the rear diff in a 95.5 Tacoma with same motor and tranny is? Its extended cab but no badging any where.

if they were measured at the wheels the weight would matter just a bit. its only 7hp. if measured at the crank there would be no difference due to the fact its the same motor. i do know that you add more oil i believe to a 4runner which might slow the crank a bit but help better lubricate the motor since it has to push more weight. these are both 5spd right?

NO manufacturer does their dyno tests at the wheels..it would make their specs look lower.
Tranny prolly isnt even used for the dyno test.
And if its measured at the wheels weight would still have 0 effect on torque or horsepower..how much the vehicle ways has ABSOUTELY nothing to do with how much power its engine can make.
The differences are probably from SAE changes..thats it

I think that it sums up to Cail smog stuff a 4-runner falls into a different class that a pick-up for emissions. So on the pick-up Toyota can change the fuel and timing. BTW i just put out 156 RWHP and 166 RWHP (stock/header)

It is as others mentioned, all in the exhaust. It's the same for Jeep Cherokee's vs. Wranglers even though they may both have a 4.0 Cherokee's have longer exhaust pipes that aid in building up the velocity of the out going exhaust, much like a long barreled vs. a short barreled rifle.

Cutting a hole in the airbox nets 7whp and that's free which makes me cringe even more when I see a freind spend $200+ on a filter setup.
I'm sorry but rearend dynos can't detect such minor HP increases unless you have a miracle butt since a dragstrip run won't show 7whp on a 4Runner and I know from experience. 20whp and then you might be able to tell but on a 4000lb vehicle it's just not really there.

I've always assumed the number difference was exhaust or some other slightly more restrictive piece on the Runners. I doubt it is a change in testing as all 3rd gen runners w/ the 3.4 are rated at 183 while all 95.5-04 V6Tacomas are rated at 190. It is strange though that there is no listed difference between the 4Runner and Tacoma equipped w/ the 2.7 they are all rated to 150.
