It was originally supposed to be a 95, but ended up being delayed by a series of concerns at the factory.

*I JUST MADE THAT UP... I HAVE NO IDEA*

Sales. New models in the showroom generates sales. Mid year body style change isn't particuarly uncommon. Many cars (like the new Mustang or nearly every new Corvette style) came out very early, but usually as a Next years model. The real question is why they didn't just call it a 96 like the other automakers do? Perhaps there's something that prevents "import" manufacturers from doing that.

One version of the story I heard a long time ago was that it was a combination of 2 factors:

(1) Delays in ramping up production of the totally-new Tacoma at NUMMI in California

(2) A backlog of Japan-built PreTaco's that they didn't want to have to sell off as left-over 1994's

They imported and sold off the remaining PreTacos as '1995' models, thus buying time to get things squared away for the Tacoma introduction. Since this pushed them into the middle of their model year, they called the new Tacomas '1995.5'.

.... Or that's what I heard ....

Sounds right. There is always the problem of moving left overs when a new one comes out.
