Tacoma Power Steering Pump Replacment

My pump has been making noise that were indicating terminal symptoms. Adding fluid did not address the noise, so time to replace.

Dealer wanted $356.00 for a new one. $231.00 for a reman. NAPA wanted $170.00+ for a reman. Went with the reman Toyota and installed it today.

Some pointers to remember should you want to try this.

-You DO NOT get a reservoir with the reman pump. You must remove yours and the belt pulley when you turn yours in to avoid the $90.00 core charge. The new pump comes with a new O ring for the base of the reservoir. Be sure and replace it to avoid leaks.

-Put a couple of plastic bags down around the alternator to protect it from the ATF that will come flowing out.

-A 24 mm open end wrench is required when you break the union bolt loose. They want you to push against the wrench breaking the bolt loose to avoid snapping off the casting. Watch the washers on BOTH sides of the union fitting. Don't drop them.

-The service manual wants you to use a special tool to hold the belt pulley when removing the nut. Not needed. Insert a 3/8" roll pin punch into one of the mounting bolt holes and let it extend out far enought to foul the pulley hole.

-The mounting bolts that hold the pump to the bracket pass thru the belt pulley. Came out just fine, but the reman pump was O so slightly different. The bolts would not pass thru going back. Had to remove the pulley and install the bolts. Replace pulley on pump while mounted on engine. Thank you Snap-On for flex head torque wrenches!

-To bleed the system, jack BOTH front wheels off the ground. Turn the wheels lock to lock with the engine OFF at least 4 times. Drop the wheels to the ground and crank up. Let the engine idle for few minutes and turn the wheels lock to lock several times with the engine running. Look into the reservoir for bubbles in the fluid. No bubbles means you are finished.

-Clean up tools and be happy about all the money you saved.

Not a bad job overall. Got 95,000 miles out of the other pump. Hope this one will last as long.
